Max implied that providing the DC numbers for the climbing example may give away more information than he prefers. Maybe it is the meta of it maybe not, but providing the AC number the opponent successfully attained with their attack roll allows one to determine whether the Shield spell, which...

Do you also NOT tell them if the Shield spell will help prevent the opponent's attack?

I think it was a tongue-and-cheek comment, nothing serious meant by it. Besides dishwater should never be dull, if it is you need to replace it with some fresh piping soapy water. I just did two loads of dishes! My domestic is coming to a clean kitchen for a change.

I remember I was not a huge fan of it in 3e because if you were not selecting it you seemingly became quite bad at something you should automatically be good it. So it became a tax. Whereas in 5e because of the bounded accuracy, degrees of success, fail forward etc it doesn't seem so much of a...

@Lanefan, somewhere upthread you mentioned you're not interested so much in introspection and the personal development of the characters. Granted D&D (even 5e) does not have the mechanics and reward systems of games built with these goals in mind but the little way in which our table has...

So in the case of 5e you're saying Insight and Perception are not a good mechanic for the game. Just to explore this idea further... Would that remove trap noticing since a Dexterity Save etc can deal with the narration of a failed check to spot the trap in time? Would that remove the Insight...

My stab at it. Either 3.5e or 5e (2014) described the setting as a dynamic. Now I'm not in a position to quickly see what the edition said about this but I would describe it as a setting where change occurs and is not only reactive to actions by PCs but one should think of the entire setting as...

So, the background provides an affiliation to Halfred and Marfan and this band called Regulators who have some history and who have pledged loyalty to Clan Bulwark...etc I'm curious how any of the above ties into my post. Did the player create these NPCs (and I'm not talking mechanics)? Did...

D&D 5E (2014) Combat - with players making the attack rolls only

This thread is about an idea inspired by my conversation with some of the posters playing indie games whereby the players are the only ones who roll attack rolls during combat (using Degrees of Success and Failure). Their opponent, a dragon, made auto successes with their LA or if the PC failed...

But the players are not necessarily walking into a new town, they're starting up in a village, town or city or even on a sea vessel. Relationships have already been established with people and organisations. And all this could be besides the inference of their family. I'm talking about the...

I would tend to agree with you, despite my table playing traditional D&D with indie techniques and ideas thrown in here and there and willing to incorporate some player-facing mechanics, but I feel that whether it is for the good of the party or the bad I cannot consider myself impartial. I...

Predictable Outcomes of a Module A module I injected into my campaign provided the following predictable outcomes. 1. Find out what Thay was doing with the Cult of the Dragon; 2. Destroy the undead dragon army Thay was building; 3. Make an alliance between the Council of Waterdeep and the Thay...

This gets to the heart of it I feel. Low gritty level fantasy which many of the D&Ders (certainly me) have been striving to do by tinkering on every edition. I like it, it is very evocative (and simple). Certainly worthy of the praise @Hussar has been banging on about.

My apologies. I thought you were disparaging the poster for playing a playstyle which is not in the 5e book. As it happens it is neither mentioned in the 2014 edition or 3rd edition (contents or index). I didn't bother checking 2e or 1e - the latter of which I only have in pdf format.

So how does one distinguish between say a pack of a goblins and an earth elemental with the numbers? Are the DCs (AC) higher? Is the harm/damage one receives from bad attack rolls greater from specific monsters?

Do you also champion the DMG on its DMing advice or is that not the cherry we pick?

What happened at my table is that I as DM created NPCs with motivations, desires and flaws and while I was attempting to build a story and characters with depth, many a time I got back shallow character concepts, 2-dimensional characters that had an inclination to favour choices which served the...
