New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

I prefer this -- we have enough creatures that are spirits-in-the-form-of-animals. It's nice that this actually is the animal.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

Even more than that, though: this over-writes the pre-existing subclass, which was pilliried when it came out, and which has been apparently very seldom played. Sure, there are some, but the PDK in SCAG was not well received. The pivot makes sense.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

INT is used elsewhere in the subclass, and it has no effect on the particular spell. Consistency is good here. Yes -- this is an improvement and it's good it's here. I agree that it could be generically themed, and a "dragon Knight" could choose between a dozen options of colour/metal --...

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

no. Agreed. Almost, but not quite. Many clerics are going to have proficiency in Religion from level 1. This incentivizes them not to do so -- indeed, taking any knowledge skills at level 1 that are relevant is counter productive. It has to be you gain proficiency in two of the skills AND you...

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

What part of Mage Armor doesn't work for you, that isn't something that's simply tied to flavour? Or is it that the fantasy is wearing leather armor? If we assume 14 dex, 17 Int to start (pretty safe bets, in my experience, for any wizard), and a feat at 4 that gives +1 Int, you've got (13 +...

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

But it does work with Mage Armor. I really hope they just leave those spells in the old material. They became so ubiquitous; if they never return, I won't be sad.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

When Mage Armor exists, the weight of this concern, for me, is significantly diminished. A 1-level dip or a feat choice can also give armor or shield proficiencies aplenty. [this is wrong, as noted downthread]

This is a really good observation. It means the ALERT feat is really powerful with this.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

Overall, the Fighter, Paladin, and Ranger seem like the ones that I would most liek to play right away. Cleric is solid. Obviously, the Wizard too, but Bladesinger has always been overclocked.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

An interesting mix here. Some initial thoughts: College of the Moon: being able to reduce a successful save by a bardic inspiration die will be very effective in a teamwork situation. Nice. Is it enough to carry the subclass? Not sure. Knowledge Cleric: Blessings of Knowledge needs to be...

AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

The Colonel looks at Donnell, who seems already to be feeling the weight of the responsibility that leadership brings. The lad's trying hard, the Colonel thinks, and when Donnell offers to take the first watch, the Colonel cleans up the cups around the campfire, and sets down to rest, waking to...

AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

That's a good thought, but the Colonel can give THP to 5 plus himself. So someone would need to choose to go without to boost an animal. I'm not ocnvinced of the value of horses, generally, but we can always let them go if need be. If we are breaking into the fortress, however, I expect they'll...

AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

"Ready when you are, sir," the Colonel says. He takes a horse, and pulls it in position behind Donnell.

AtG Howling Crag (5e PBP) IC

The Colonel proceeds with the group, not feeling the need to operate with stealth unless it were ordered. And if it were, he knew that there were magics that could make a stealthy all the more effective. Using the sending stone had been a mistake, but it was a mistake the Colonel could live...

    Star Trek: Section 31

Also, the completely gratuitious Aeschylus quote at the beginning, which has no relation to what follows. (The passage, since the precise source is not cited, is Aeschylus, Libation Bearers 647-48).

    Star Trek: Section 31

Just finished it. It was not meant for me. (spoilers follow). Turning Section 31 into the IMF (complete with "if you should choose to accept it" recordings) tries to capitalize on Tom Cruise movies to make us like, or at least root for, what the characters here are doing. It all felt very...

D&D 5E (2024) Monster manual Fey video up

I believe we know that the 5e take on gnolls was very strongly driven by one designer (Mearls) who is no longer involved. What we saw in Volo's reflected that view. It is possible that the extreme view will be relaxed in the post-2024 era.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Is Almost Upon Us! Discuss What You Want

...feeling the need to name-check the Great American Songbook in the SNW musical episode. I tried to convince myself that the awkwardness of the moment shows how far removed the series is from the real world of the 20th c., but I know that's not the case.
