How do you explain overnight Healing in your game?

I guess you could say that mine is the "John McClane" approach as well. They don't magically heal all their wounds. They just bandage, stitch themselves up, and do enough to keep them up and going. Characters with full hit points aren't characters that have no injuries, they are characters...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

Yeah, this probably should have started in Houserules... I think my original though was how to use existing rules (and rules in the DMG) to support it, but it does quickly move into a houserules category. And I agree that he is fixating too much on this tactic. I think he feels that this is a...

    Warlocks and Forced Teleportation

The biggest reason is because that it seems to go against the spirit of what the powers were designed to do. I don't think anyone can honestly say that they believe that it was the intention of the design of teleport powers to give a free d10 of damage per 2 squares you teleport an enemy...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

Let me try to clarify a few things. My friend isn't anti-4E. He certainly has reservations, and there are definitely things that seem to bug him, but he's willing to play. There are also certain things he likes about 4E. I think if he had his way, he'd pick and choose things between 3.5 and...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

Trust me, I'm in 100% agreement with you on the What's good for the players is good for the DM school of thought. A true disarm would be devastating to PCs and insignificant to NPCs as the rules are written. My proposed solution was a kludge really. It works from PCs to NPCs, but it certainly...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

I understand that disarming would do little too monsters by RAW, which is why I was considering it to be a kind of status effect of -2 hit (to emulate loss of proficiency) and -2 damage to emulate a smaller damage di. Many monsters are designed to have both a close and ranged attack as well...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

Wow, lots of replies while I was still typing. Yeah, I see the problems in disarm mechanics also, which is why I have struggled with this a little. And to the person that said that it should apply to ranged attacks as well, yes you're right. In fact, it should apply to any attacks used by the...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

I think I was guilty of subconscious plagiarism. Apparently there is a only a single monster that has a disarm effect, and that is "Jarlaxle Baenre" from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, and it is also called "Flashy Disarm". I had chosen that name to represent that it would be a kind of...

    D&D 4E Disarm in 4E

So, I've been trying to gather players for a new gaming group (since I've moved), and I have one potential player that is much more of a stimulationist than I am. In fact, he's my former DM from my 2E and 3.0 days. So anyway, he keeps bringing up disarm. While I disagree, he seems to think of...

    Warlocks and Forced Teleportation

Yeah, I think it's clear to say that it wasn't the intent to have players teleport people up into mid-air, though I think there should be different limitations on forced teleportation than movement, but this is one of those times that the DM just has to decide what they believe follows the...

    Is 3.0 Playable?

I mostly prefer 4E to 3E or 3.5. I mostly prefer 3E to AD&D. I prefer mostly AD&D to OD&D. All of them always have been and always will be playable, and will appeal to different tastes and preferences of each player. Play what you and your friends enjoy. Edition wars suck and are pointless...

    Invisibility

There is no rule about the invisibility state that says it is broken if you attack. The duration is exactly what the power says, nothing more, nothing less. If the power says it is broken upon attacking, it does. If the power doesn't say, then it doesn't.

Only one mark at a time?

I think that a more clear way of looking at this is if the enemy is included in the Target section of the power, you can mark it. If it is only referenced in the Effect, and not the Target, you cannot.

Only one mark at a time?

Yeah, DracoSuave has it right here. In fact, I remember when 4E was new and people first realized that a Dragonborn Fighter could mark multiple targets with his Breath attack (or an area effect power gained through multiclass feats).

Dealing with a DM who takes things too literally

I was siding with you at first in this discussion, but the more I read things, the more I think both you and your DM are "wrong" (in a way). I think the two of you need a perspective that's between the two of you. Based on what you've said, it sounds like your DM might have a 4E bias. He...

    Streetwise skill not needed

As someone pointed out, the ability to spot dangerous alleys in a new city is VERY believable, if you've been in enough urban environments. However, I still think you are looking at it all wrong, and seem to be so stuck with a prejudice for the skill that you are failing to see it for what it...

    minis and battlemats or not?

Exactly the same way I feel. In my opinion, it doesn't hurt the imagination to have a visual representation, but rather helps everyone at the table to make sure that their imaginations are lined up an compatible. Sometimes there can be large gaps between what we are thinking, what we are...

Staff as implement (Do I need two hands?)

I think a big part of the debate is whether there is a separate "staff implement" and "staff weapon" item, and whether a quarterstaff is a weapon. I think there are different opinions among both us and different members of CSR. Personally, I think that a quarterstaff is a staff, and rule they...

Staff as implement (Do I need two hands?)

I have wondered that question, and have even asked that question during previous discussions on this subject. As I mentioned earlier, I can't find any rules one way or the other that discuss if a player must use one or two hands to wield an implement, only that you must wield it.

Staff as implement (Do I need two hands?)

I don't disagree with what you said. It may be possible that I had inadvertently misconstrued the previous post, but I didn't read it as stating that non hands was explicitly an exception (which is true) while the other was not explicitly stated as an exception (which is also true). It sounded...
