D&D 5E (2024) Opinions on the Topaz Dragon Reverse Wings?

I’ll give you « interesting », but I don’t find it surprising. Our suspension of disbelief is intimately linked to what we know and have experienced. There are many ways to fly in fantasy, but most exist in relations to things we know. Maybe dragons fly like birds. Maybe theyfly like bats...

D&D 5E (2024) Opinions on the Topaz Dragon Reverse Wings?

I’d sooner accept a dragon that can fly without wings, or one with wings detached from its body like the spines of the topaz dragon than a dragon that does have wings but use them in a way that is counter-productive. It’s like having a car with wheels on the roof instead of where they usually...

D&D 5E (2024) Opinions on the Topaz Dragon Reverse Wings?

I mean, despite my thoughts about backward wings, the artist is undeniably talented and it’s a beautifully executed piece! If I was to use Topaz dragons in my games, they’d be the equivalent of double-jointed dragons who found a way to use their wings to do something (some kind of...

D&D 5E (2024) Opinions on the Topaz Dragon Reverse Wings?

I don’t see anything controversial. I just find it incredibly goofy. I’m not a fan of « because magic » or « because dragon » as a universal hand-wave pass for anything or everything….

Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

Yeah, Ars Magica, Pendragon, and WFRP are all mid-eighties games. Whether that is « old school » is debatable.

Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

Pendragon, Ars Magika, and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay each represent a different aspect of fantasy European feudal/imperial era. Each are worth playing IMO, and you’ll get a very different vibe out of each game. Ars Magika is the most immersed in the medieval paradigm, despite all the magic...

Star Wars RPG hack of TOR, now with space combat! (feedback wanted)

I edited the three documents with the latest updates (mostly cosmetic but with a few corrections and additions such as a table of content, etc). I didn't remove all the images this time so here they are in all their glorious lavishness. Still not sure about the power level of the adversaries...

Break Canon: New Adventures in Known Universes

Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and Star Trek work really well for this. In many cases, breaking canon is canon with all their official alternate universes/timelines/reboots/what-ifs. Star Wars is particularly ripe for breaking canon IMO, almost begging for it really with Star Wars stories going in so...

Star Wars RPG hack of TOR, now with space combat! (feedback wanted)

(Edited 07-27-2025) Two years ago, I started working on a Star Wars RPG using the rules of The One Ring 2e. To avoid necromancy, I'm making a new thread but you can find the original discussions on these forums here. I finally sat down to complete the Starship Creation and Space Combat rules...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

I think that a lot of people use « realism » to express « relatability ». They want rules that reflect what they have experienced in the past. Which I think is legitimate, to a certain extent at any case. But realism, for a million reasons that would be to heavy to track in roleplaying games...

    Optimization and optimizers...

If they’re wasting character resources and letting go better feats, they’re not very good optimizers. Min-Maxers will try to get the highest bonus and leave the biggest weaknesses wide open. Oftentimes that is less than optimal. These builds don’t score high on my optimizer scale…

D&D General Optimistic Thoughts on Optimizing

Of course optimisers like puppies! It’s the best way to get chicks! Obviously you have to be selective about your puppy for maximum cuteness and chick-magnetism. And depending on who you’re after, you may want to look into hypoallergenic breeds… As for ice cream, well, there’s a great debate...

A few things I really like about WFRP

I don’t know to what extent this is true, but I always felt that Warhammer had a more European feel, both in the themes and geography of its setting, and in the way it was meant to be played. My experience with European players is almost exclusively from France, but it was clear that their play...

Planescape Which Planescape faction do you most closely identify with?

Transcendant Order for me. There’s a time for action and a time for inaction, but there is no idleness. Also, I may have had the hots for Rhys…

Looking for a properly bleak game for a paper.

The underlaying setting of Blades in the Dark is pretty bleak as well. The sun has vanished. The seas are ink-black but transparent, letting star-like lights shine through, and filled with gargantuan creatures. The soul of the departed no longer go to an afterlife and keep haunting the land...

Looking for a properly bleak game for a paper.

I remember finding that Wraith: The Oblivion was depressingly bleak. I haven’t read anything about it in years though

    Optimization and optimizers...

But players out to break things and ruin everybody’s fun are not just optimizers; they’re jerks who use optimisation to ruin everybody’s fun. They’re are many ways of being disruptive around the table; this is but one of them. As in all things, accidental jerkiness happens, and perhaps they’re...

    Optimization and optimizers...

I mostly agree with you, with the caveat that between “minor optimisation” and “optimisation before concept” there is a large number of people who optimize “majorly” on wholesome character concepts. I know many (and me among them) that take great pleasure in optimizing concepts that are not...
