Can you tell me how to get to Ol’-Skool street?

Forget all those naysayers. ;) I still play "Basic D&D" and love it. Here is a quick nutshell to old school goodness: 1. Find a copy of the Red rulebook released in 1981, with the Erol Otus cover. 2. Read it through. It is a good book yet simple. 3. Assemble your players. 4. Have them...

    Tunnels & Trolls, anyone?

It has been a few weeks now, and I must say, I still love T&T. The 30th anniv. box set is my first exposure to this game. I am going to buy the 5.5 also. No offense to the FD guys, but I don't really care for their alternate rules, but YMMV.

    Savage Worlds Quibbles...am I correct?

During the original playtests, this was the way the game was designed (to have opposing rolls). The game designers and playtesters decided it was best to go with the static number for defense. It seemed to work better. If you are interested, be sure to check out PEGs website. It is an...

Want to play some OLD SKOOL D&D?

That is what old school D&D is about. Eric, RA best me to the punch on AC. I had been doing that for years now.

    Savage Worlds Quibbles...am I correct?

Do yourself a favor. Play SW for three, no less than three sessions. To really appriciate this game you have to play it. When I read the rulebook, I almost put it down. You really discover how awesome this game is through game play. The wounds, IMO, are the single best feature of the system...

    Review of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Sorry, I must have glossed over this: The magic system of WFRP is similar to the system in Call of Cthuhlu. Characters cast arcane spells they have acquired via the advancement system, and risk catastrophic negative effects each time they use magic. Some of these effects are sufficient to...

    Review of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

This review is unbelieveable. Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing is one of the best RPGs ever created, both version 1 and 2. It predates 3rd edition by more than a decade. To say that it is a derivative of 3rd edition is pretty arrogant, IMO. To honor P'Cat's request here is some relavant WH...

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

Exactly why the game industry is screwed up, eh? :\ I am very disapointed in you Mike. Go to your Wizzo archive closet and find a Pink box containing a 64 page red book that was released in 1981 entitled "Dungeons & Dragons" Fantasy Adventure Game. That is one of the smallest page counts in...

Against the Shadows VII - A Faded Glory Story Hour (Re-Updated - 5/17)

Old One, thanks for the making the PDF. I am so far behind, it is good to start from the begining again. I hope you are able to put all the tale together like that.

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

Holy Moly! This is one long thread. I have a lot to digest before I reply again. ;)

    Why don't I get warm-tingly feelings when I buy a 3E product like in 1E/2E/Basic D&D?

Without citing the merits and drawbacks of any of the editions, there is also some kind of quickening effect. All these companies, all these products, all these websites, many many many of much inundate gamers with massive amounts of stuff. I agree with someone who says much of what material...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

I prefer the Original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (as Gary calls it) over all other versions, with the sole exception of the Basic / Expert 1981 sets, for which I love equally for different reasons. For AD&D, I stick with the PHB, DMG, and MM, maybe a slight rare reference to FF or DDg. I...

Against the Cult of the Reptile God - your experiences?

One of my all time favorite modules, thought I think a little too tough for 1st level PCs unless they had a decent sized party.

    South Central NJ

Well, that would be ideal, but currently my schedule is so wacky, I am not regular enough for anything steady. There was a group of guys I was going to play 1st ed with around Cherry Hill a few months ago, but I had a death in the family and the DM now has a new addition to his. So, that group...

North Carolina Game Day VI: January 29

Oh my, Henry!!! Why aren't you using the Grenadier Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures, made of lead, and from the box with the yellow sides and the blue foam inside? What kind of First Edition game is this?!?!? ;) ;) It is great to see you guys having fun with my favorite...

Any of you pine for AD&D 1/2?

System shock, Ressurection survival, unnatural aging, save vs. death, all elements that add a sense of danger to the game.

If you started playing D&D with the Basic D&D rules, which edition was it?

I got the blue book Holmes set with chits from K Mart clearace rack for $1 in 1979. I always wanted to be THAT fighter about to loose the arrow at the red dragon. It lead me into AD&D. The rest is history.
