    D&D 5E (2014) Running an escape adventure

Probably try to find information about Out of the Abyss. I think the adventure starts with the PCs running from Drow.

D&D 5E (2014) Are monks proficient in Unarmed Strikes?

The official info related to the errata can probably be found in http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/sage-advice-june2015 I am afraid you won't be satisfied with that one, CapnZapp

D&D 5E (2014) Are monks proficient in Unarmed Strikes?

One thing that is and probably should be prevented with unarmed strikes not being a weapon: Booming Blade and Greenflame Blade unarmed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard Loot?

I agree with others starting that staves and robes should be good. I would also add rings, cloaks and generally fun things (alchemy jug comes to mind). As a spellcaster I would also like to find priced material components (e.g. a pearl for the spell identify) as part of a treasure. Finding the...

D&D 5E (2014) How are Drow viewed in the 5E Forgotten Realms?

Since they have been made into a PHB race they are no longer on the "shot on sight" level. There are also a bunch of more or less outcasts by now (I guess the drow mercenaries from novels you might have read among them) who have made it more reasonable that you might be given a chance. If you...

D&D 5E (2014) Are monks proficient in Unarmed Strikes?

If fists are weapons in every way then a fighter with the dueling fighting style NEEDS to carry a shield in order to use the style if I recall correctly. Dueling fighting style combined with a hand free for grappling or spellcasting would not work well. So I guess the "fists are not weapons" is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Players Handbook problems

I also sent my 1st print PHB in for replacement recently after contacting WotC. Haven't heard anything since I sent it, but I expect it to still be on a boat crossing the Atlantic to the US right now.

D&D 5E (2014) Can Beholders fly in an Anti-Magic field?

It was a fun one-shot (Christmas session, we ended up taking out Santa Claus and Rudolph the Ancient Red Dragon), but with so many successful saves and yet the main ranged damage dealers charmed for much of the fight it dragged out a bit too much. The "walls of fire, thorns etc everywhere" part...

D&D 5E (2014) Can Beholders fly in an Anti-Magic field?

Well, they can turn off (or turn away) the antimagic cone they have, so if antimagic turns them down on the ground, it is a question of who is Han Solo of the Beholders. And even if it does not send them to the ground I guess they are forced to use bites, since the antimagic thing they have will...

D&D 5E (2014) Can Beholders fly in an Anti-Magic field?

If you are the DM and you want it to work, but also want some written material to justify it, I would point to SCAG page 18. Under the heading "The weave" it states that "[s]ome creatures, objects, and locations have deep, intrinisc ties to the Weave and can perform extraordinary feats that come...

D&D 5E (2014) Could SCAG be power creep?

The intent behind both those manouvers and PDK/Banneret is that they should be similar to the 4e Warlord. I consider PDK less of a failure in that sense since it at least makes me want to try it when I just read about it. Any opinions about wanting the support from both subclasses belong in the...

D&D 5E (2014) Could SCAG be power creep?

One new option I would consider interesting with SCAG rules: Half-elf variant with Booming Blade as swashbuckling rogue. Attack enemy melee characters, then run away.

D&D 5E (2014) Could SCAG be power creep?

Now that you mention it, I think that is an option. However, the price for those wings are way to high to be worth it.

D&D 5E (2014) Could SCAG be power creep?

I don't think they've said that all options are equally effective in combat, and combat is where power creep may happen. So comparing the combat abilities, I think "high end of the PHB" is a good description. There are also options clearly not focused on combat, and it mostly offers diversity.

D&D 5E (2014) Could SCAG be power creep?

There is a really good monk subclass and some really nice cantrips for weapon users, but I doubt that any of the most damage optimised characters rely on SCAG material.

Not using Grid / minis / pawns

I would certainly play without a grid, but having some kind of visual aid for positioning is nice. My group use Roll20, currently with me running LMoP. For the encounters where there are maps provided in the adventure I try to draw them while the characters explore, providing the positions of...

D&D 5E (2014) Gems, Jewelry, Art Objects value (Appraisal)

My group tends to be OK with individual characters trying to take an extra amount of treasure. Also, we are currently playing the Starter Set adventure and one PC considered the value of something they found as treasure compared to an item one NPC asked them to use as payment to another. In...

    D&D 5E (2014) Paladin Oathbound/Oathbreaker

I think the tenets tend to be obvious about it. Devotion: compassion and honour would not fit with evil. Ancients: really needs twisting to not be anti-evil. Vengeance: can ally with an evil to destroy another evil. Crown: Works with Lawful Anything.

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

It seems to me that most agree that monks are not the ones being best at things. What I would like to know is: how do they fare when they are at their worst? A Paladin without javelins or a bow won't help much against a beholder flying around out of reach. A fighter who loses its weapon can't...

    DM Advice

The adventure works well for 4-5 players, not sure if anything changes much otherwise. Compared to 4e the level 1 PCs are squishier, and I had half the party incapacitated in the Cragmaw Hideout. For the exploration of locations it can be good to draw them as the players explore (see of you can...
