D&D 5E (2014) Dispel Magic, Ready action and Fireball

Dispel magic can target a magical effect. Wouldn't a fireball that has left a caster's hand but not exploded to inflict damage be a valid target? If it must move through the air, couldn't that movement be readied against at a desired point in the trajectory, much as you could a moving enemy?

New to Star Wars RPGs...just bought D6

I love this system and played the heck out of it back in the day. You can get a TON of great WEG D6 pdf resources online for free. D6 Space, D6 Space Ships, D6 Fantasy, etc. that are generic versions of the rules WEG put out after they lost the Star Wars license. There's also a free open source...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

So what tactical choices are missing? What would you need to add to bring 5e up to snuff? I'm not a huge fan of how 5e classes are put together, but it seems to me that they have access to just about everything in the 3X/Pathfinder line in some form or another. At the same time, there's less...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

If a player maneuvers their character into a position to win without a roll, I'd just go ahead and let them win without a roll. "Congrats, mighty adventurer, you are the master of your fate." The maneuvering is the test, not the roll. As a player, I once went through the massive, climactic...

D&D 5E (2014) To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

Fudging is the worst. It's narrative resolution masquerading as mechanical resolution. Either method is fine, but you lose legitimacy if you're pretending to do one while actually doing the other. If I'm going through the trouble of rolling a die, I'm going to stick by the result. If you don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Ditching concentration - did you do it?

No, but you can wield an unlimited number of weapons simultaneously and wear an unlimited number of armor suits.

D&D 5E (2014) How cognizant are you of the rules of the game?

I'll optimize, mainly since I want to be able to pull my weight in the party, but I will absolutely refuse to pick character options or combinations that fall far outside general power expectations (4e frostcheese comes to mind). I really hate playing Splatbooks & Spreadsheets, though. I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

The relevant questions are: 1. Is the class fun to play? 2. Can a PC playing the class contribute meaningfully to the party's efforts? Classes that generate fun and useful PCs should stay. Those that have trouble doing so should be cut or improved until they can. If there is a consensus that...

D&D 5E (2014) Adventure Design: Backstory and History

Man, those are some depressing and formidable text-walls. One of the reasons I don't run published adventures is that it's faster and easier for me to jot down 1-2 pages of notes than to read and comprehend 30-100 pages of dense backstory and extraneous details. I used to write elaborate...

D&D 5E (2014) The use of Monster Stat Blocks in Adventures

I don't run published adventures but in my own adventure notes, I usually put mini-stat blocks for all the relevant beasties on a single page. When I run a combat I can switch to that page and have everything I need. It also allows me to improvise a lot--I'll reflavor the wolves from the misty...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing my map-fu for Out of the Abyss

I agree that PbP or even VTT gaming almost requires a battlemap. It's why I started making them in the first place. I've run games on Maptool and Roll20 and maps are immensely useful for any sort of complex combat. I just decided to de-emphasize elaborate set-piece battles for my adventures. My...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing my map-fu for Out of the Abyss

Granted, it's taken me a couple of years of tinkering, checking out tutorials, and building up my resource library to get to that point. I could create decent maps within a couple of weeks. They had grids and were playable, but certainly weren't pretty to look at. I was going to write a tutorial...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing my map-fu for Out of the Abyss

I use Paint.NET (the getpaint one) for my mapmaking, mainly because it was the first free software I tried out and I have the most experience with it. I can create simple maps (such cavern outlines with textures) in less than 5 minutes. The software requires a few plugins to really shine for...

Which deities and pantheons have you used in your D&D fantasy settings?

Always custom-made. Always. My original fantasy world had an extremely elaborate mythology to it. The gods and other associated beings were quite potent but were bound by complex laws, symbolism and superstitions. The "pantheon" consisted of 2 greater gods, 10+ lesser gods, 13 titans, the earth...

D&D 5E (2014) Large Party With "Large" Level Split

The start them at 3rd level is the easiest and most sensible, but if you're committed to 1st level (which it sounds like you are), you just have to be wary of throwing CR2+ monsters, traps and challenges at them. They might be able to contribute to such fights, but they won't be able to last...

D&D 5E (2014) Campaign Settings 5e- Why I want to Forget the Realms

The Forgotten Realms offers quantity of content over quality of content. Everything provided is some combination of bland, derivative, ill-considered or obnoxious. It's not blank enough to be a blank slate or flavorful enough to be evocative. It's a kitchen-sink setting that allows for a myriad...

    D&D 5E (2014) MCU's Asgardians in 5E D&D terms

If I were to port MCU Asgardians into a fantasy world using the 5E rules, I'd probably give them an unbalanced racial template with significant resistances and ability score boosts (putting their cap at 22 rather than a mortal 20) for Strength and Constitution. Someone like Thor would be a 15+...

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

I never allow retries (by the same character or other characters) unless there is a penalty for failure or a cost associated with the attempt (i.e. roll Wisdom to find your way out of the labyrinth, each failed check costs 1d6 hours of time OR roll Dexterity to try to snatch the artifact from...

Anyone else not a fan of HUGE dungeon crawls?

I'm not a fan of the classic dungeon of any size. It just seems like such an artificial environment to me with its seemingly randomly sprinkled traps, treasures and monsters. I certainly not interested in writing, mapping and stocking a 100 room complex as a DM or the dungeon-crawling routine as...
