D&D 5E (2014) Killing is Wrong: Adding Theme to a Campaign

I've run a bunch of D&D with no (or limited) killing. Works just fine. Some of these were gaming for kids, wherein the mean goblins run away at 0hp. Others were on the opposite end of the spectrum with sophisticated parties that had complex, noble goals and the ingenuity to strive after them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I hate the Forgotten Realms because the worst and most uninspired D&D games I've ever run were set there. We started playing with our own world back in the 80s when I was in middle school. This consisted of the names of maybe 10 kingdoms and areas sketched on a crude map. There might have been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Looking for a Flame Blade fix

I'd consider increasing the duration to 1 hour and possibly allowing adding spell casting stat to damage. That gives some potential extended use and a modest damage bump. Makes it more comparable to magic weapon as well. As for concentrating on melee spells, I've been mulling over allowing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Range/Move Redux

I experimented with giving Large or larger monsters resistance to ranged attack damage (from Medium-sized or smaller attackers) in a limited-run campaign since I wanted a heroic melee warrior milieu of questing knights and such. I also did the same for full plate armor. It worked well enough.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you have a personal Players Handbook?

I tend to put together short orientation guides for longer term campaigns that can be thought of as PHBs. I use OpenOffice and export to pdf. That way I can email them to players or print as needed. I don't tend to incorporate much art, maybe a cover picture if there's one that captures the feel...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

Once again, having passive perception as the floor of a perception check only makes sense when your passive perception has already failed to spot a hidden foe or feature and you are trying again with a check to attempt to achieve a higher roll. When a creature attempts to hide from you they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

Passive perception is only 'always on' when it is referenced in the rules--generally when it acts as a DC for a stealth check. Passive perception is specified as an option to detect traps (and I think secret doors) in the DMG as a substitute for the perception check. None of the sample traps...

    D&D 5E (2014) How to create a 3-way fight?

Monsters are monsters. There's no reason to think they would be naturally allied with each other. Many just want food. Some, like undead, might attack anything living. Constructs, elementals and summoned creatures follow their orders. Evil humanoids can be split into rival factions and even...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

The bit about passive perception being the 'floor' of your perception confuses the differences between active and passive skill uses. In no way should both results be used simultaneously. Passive perception is used as a DC for creatures sneaking up on you and, perhaps, whether or not you notice...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

So now that that's settled... How do you resolve someone attempting to grapple a creature with mirror images? :) ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Meaningful traps

My personal trap theory breaks traps into the following categories: 1. Attrition Traps or Ambush Traps. These are things that PCs blunder into causing them to take some minor damage such as arrow or poison dart traps. Mostly boring so they're best resolved quickly. I usually make them easy to...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Get Better At Skills With These Feats

Nope. Do not want. I don't mind giving out PBx2 and wouldn't even increase DCs to compensate. Does it really matter if one PC has a 90% chance of success on some checks? There's always more checks or different checks or different PCs to make checks. And it allows the player to feel their PC is...

D&D 5E (2014) Most useful DM tools at the table? Please share

Scraps of paper for recording improvised NPCs, important events and other notable facets occurring during the course of play. The scraps of paper are then quickly and invariably lost.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls on Settings

Indeed, this is because FR was largely designed as a replacement for GH (or at least adopted from Greenwood's original for this purpose and then expanded continuously over 25 years). Both can be considered relatively straight-forward fantasy settings with strong roots in the Medieval Europe...

GH is FR minus the sentimentality, romanticism and pretentiousness.

D&D 5E (2014) Should the game have extensive weapon lists?

I picked 'No'. If Moldvay ain't got it, you don't need it.

    D&D 5E (2014) I hate rapiers. Do you?

I just give all weapons the finesse property and allow players to use Strength instead of Dexterity for AC. Problem solved.

    D&D 5E (2014) Pushing off a cliff

Given its immunities and overall schtick, I'd say the golem falls to its slight inconvenience (no save allowed).

D&D 5E (2014) Uses for the Medicine skill

As I understand it, those trained in medicine find it relatively easy to make low six figures. Minus the student loans, of course.
