hm... how do i go about doing that?

Balancing the system for broke PCs

i mean that magic items will be rare and unique. think about the way that artifacts are presented in standard D&D. think about the One Ring, and Excalibur, and the Golden Fleece. these are the kind of legends that inspire the flavor of D&D, i think, but that sense that each enchanted item is...

Help my wilderness rogue get a leopard.

I'm playing a wilderness rogue (UA variant), and he wants a leopard. It would be nice if this were an animal companion, but just a regular pet would be fine too. Is there any feat that allows classes other than druids and rangers to gain animal companions?

Balancing the system for broke PCs

ok, i run a low-magic campaign where i keep my characters broke most of the time. i don't like the idea of walking into a weapon shop and saying, "can i see that +5 holy avenger in the case?" however, the farther along we get, the more i realize that ELs and CRs are calculated with magic items...

    Broken Item? Axe-Staff!

the d20srd site is very much 3.5, as stated here. if you don't believe it, check out the entry for haste.

    Broken Item? Axe-Staff!

i suppose the simplest way to do it would be to replace the item cost (usually a MW quarterstaff) with the completed magical waraxe. i dunno. what would you price this item at, and why?

    Broken Item? Axe-Staff!

ok, i found the place in the SRD where they go over this, but it seems to be referring to adding multiple abilities to the same item, not combining two different items, like a staff and a weapon (even though a staff can technically be used as a weapon). anyone have a different read on this, or...

    Broken Item? Axe-Staff!

there are rules? like, official rules? i had no idea. i think my DM was just winging the price for combination/modification.

    Broken Item? Axe-Staff!

i was just thinking about one of my first characters, a dwarven gish (fighter-sorcerer). i ended up designing a custom item for him. it was a dwarven waraxe that doubled as a staff of frost. the axe portion had the frost and icy burst qualities, and of course a +1 enhancement. i just paid...

    advice on playing dumb

that's why i'm asking advice. hey, just for a little insight, anyone want to take a crack at Rain Man's mental stats? also, there's something i forgot to mention about this character: he's a coward. through a series of bad experiences early in life, he's now afraid of just about everything...

    advice on playing dumb

i have a character with an INT of 5. he has a WIS of 14 and a CHA of 12. i've never played a PC with INT this low before. i need advice.

crit-based Hit Location System - in-process design thread

well, i wasn't really arguing against the validity of hit location systems. they're perfectly valid, it's just another level of complexity. from a fluff perspective, a combatant is usually aiming his attack. if he scores a critical hit, it seems safe to assume that he hit what he was aiming...

crit-based Hit Location System - in-process design thread

i use a modified wp/vp system myself, where wp are actually Con. i simply ask my players what exactly they're trying to accomplish with an attack roll. something more sprcific than "i swing my sword at the orc." like, "i attempt to cleave the orc's leg out from beneath him." if the PC crits...

    CDG with nonlethal damage?

what is the RAW on this, anyway? can nonlethal damage really exceed hp+10?

don't have either. i do have them hogtied, though not very well.

    CDG with nonlethal damage?

here's the situation: our mage has just knocked out three enemies with color spray. my character is opposed to killing them, but he doesn't want them waking up to cause trouble any time soon. can i perform a coup de grace with a sap?

Correspondence between real and fantasy languages

i just think common is such a bad idea. i mean, there are so many great roleplaying opportunities to be had with (mis)translation.

Anyone know how to make a good Archer

um... yeah... about that poison... good stuff. i wanted to add that when you're doing ability damage with ranged attacks, it's really not necessary to invest in feats like rapid shot or manyshot. anything that gives an attack penalty is usually detrimental. weapon focus, and anything else...

Anyone know how to make a good Archer

you may want to seriously consider poisons. at low level, the good ones are too expensive. at high levels, you can cover every arrow with black lotus. 3d6 Con both primary and secondary. also, a poison that does Str damage will ruin any paladin's day. 2d6 Str might not sound that bad, until...
