Correspondence between real and fantasy languages

half-elves speak french because they've basically been romanized... think Gaulish Celts. Orcs borrow from Dwarven because they've been conquered by the dwarves (until recently) in one part of the world. They also use the Dwarven alphabet (the ones that can actually write), having none of their...

ever run a campaign on a real-world map?

when i was introduced to Forgotten Realms, i noticed that most of the regions had real-world analogues. Calimshan was very similar to northern Africa, Amn to Spain (Castille), Cormyr to southern France, etc. this got me very interested in European geography/history, and the more i studied, the...

Correspondence between real and fantasy languages

Common: Don't use it. Elven: Gaelic Dwarven: German Gnomish: Hebrew Halfling: usually, they use the regional language, but they have a cant of their own Half-Elves: French Orcish: Slavic with a heavy smattering of German (Sorban); also Russian Centaurs: Turkic Fire Genasi: Arabic Draconic: my...

What's your Bad Guy race like?

high elves. regimented meritocracy. racist as anything. expansionist empire-builders with a strong navy (think high point of the British Empire). they use crossbows and rapiers, and all their warships are equipped with huge ballistae.

    Improved Sniping Feat

well, i like the idea of a long-range sneak attack, but won't your sneak attack range eventually exceed your weapon's range? i don't know of any weapon with a range of 600 ft., far shot or none. by the way, i based this feat off of the halfling rogue's 10th level substitution ability. i...

How Generic is Races of Eberron?

does RoE cover the core races as they are presented in the Eberron setting, in addition to the Eberron-specific races? i'm not all that interested in warforged, shifters, and the like, but from what i've heard, i really like Eberron's take on gnomes, half-elves, and orcs. are these races...

i'm playing a wilderness rogue, a sneaky archer-type character, and i'm trying to find a way to make him effective at higher levels. how does this feat sound to everyone?

    Optimal Urban Ranger Build

    Poison use and extraction

rules for poison that's from the DMG. i'm not sure of the page number, but it's in the index under "poison." the corebooks don't really explain poison very well, and the rules are, IMO, lacking. CAdv goes into a little more detail, but it's still not what i wanted. i ordered a book callled...

What are your Attractiveness Stat alteratives?

i use Charisma to respresent strictly social charm. attractiveness i offer as a 1st level feat (everyone gets an extra 1st level "inherent" feat IMCs) that gives a +2 on basically all Cha-based skill checks.

    Drow - good for anything?

the difference between an 18th and a 20th level sorcerer are three 9th level spells per day and two 9th level spells known. the difference between an 18th and 20th level wizard are two 9th level spells per day. factor in the bonus spells for the drow's intelligence/charisma bump. the...

    Drow - good for anything?

well... since the SR scales with class levels, it remains useful throughout a drow's career. also, i don't see how it's obvious that drow don't make good casters. they have bonuses to the abilities used by both full arcane casters. tell me how a human would make a better wizard or sorcerer...

    starlight

hey, what a coincidence. i didn't know you were a Brit! i'm just asking these questions for future reference, by the way, for when i DM a game. you're welcome to arbitrate it how you wish, or even hand-wave it. that's probably what i would do if it came up, but i was just wondering what the...

    starlight

ok, i may as well give the situation that needs to be resolved. Savage Tides, chp. 1: my character, a stealthy archer, has just boarded the Blue Nixie by way of the ropes on the far side. the pirates (or whatever) are on the other side. that's a distance of something like 115 ft. i assume...

    starlight

are there no rules for range of vision with no direct source of illumination? why would they even bother specifying "twice as far as a human in starlight" if there's no rule about how far a human can see under those conditions?
