    The Death of Simulation

A few minor differences for combat perhaps, which again only makes up a very small fraction of world design and simulationism. Whether goblins get 5 imaginary hit points if they are an NPC or 10 imaginary hit points as a PC is nearly insignificant to me in terms of campaign style. I can see...

    The Death of Simulation

You phrase it as though space is taken away from simulationism. DMs can still develop NPCs using the rules for building PCs but now they can also use a more streamlined system too. I fail to see how they are taking anything away from simulationism. Please explain the 'ingame process of...

    The Death of Simulation

I fail to see how providing a streamlined system for statting NPCs prevents a more simulationist favoring DM from creating NPCs using the PC build rules. It just isn't the default assumption anymore. It has been said you can add class levels to monsters and NPCs. On the other hand, I do see...

"Just House Rule It" and the New DM

I think I'm hearing two simple breakdowns: Changes: If you want to 'wrestle' in 4E, you just do an opposed strength check? I am houseruling that it provokes an 'Opportunity Attack'. Additions: How much does it cost to buy a wagon? It doesn't say, so I'll make something up. Or better yet...

    The Death of Simulation

I agree, I think understand game style is important in appreciating games. They are all styles, and IMO no one is 'better' than the other. Thank you for describing the differences. Specifically, what is difference about simulationism? In GDS, reliance on world building rules is generally in...

    The Death of Simulation

As Vegepygmy and others pointed out, there is also the GDS (Gamist-Dramatist-Simulationist) model. I personally don't have enough understanding of GNS to know the difference between Simulationism in both models, but if someone has time I would love to hear an overview. Big Model theory...

D&D 4E 4E - Possibilities of Marketing to Baby Boomers?

"D&D: For when you inherit your parents' basement." Or how about: "D&D: For when you're too old to be cool." Or: "D&D: For when you lose your hand-to-eye coordination." Or: "D&D: For when you want to play someone who's 100 and doesn't look a day over 20."

    Damage types from DDM

IIRC, the following types were not in 3.5 DDM: Bludgeoning Piercing Slashing Non-lethal So seeing them ommitted in 4E DDM does not mean they will be ommitted in 4E RPG.

IIRC, there was no 5' step in DDM before.

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

As I implied in my first post, and everyone seems to ignore... Dragons have treasure. Magic items are treasure. Magic items can do things casters can do. Why do dragons need to be casters?

    D&D 4E 4e D&D PC games

Turn based coop, like D&D Tactics for the PSP, but with a better handle on the rules and on the PC. My preference for set and setting is unknown at this time, as I don't know what the 4E Realms will look like or Points of Light. I'm guessing something in Phlan though...

worlds and monsters is in my hands

I am not going to remember "+2 racial bonus to Jump, Climb and Craft" in a monster book. A little prose will make it easier though, especially if there's a little backstory that explains why they are such great blacksmiths, or what they have crafted. And I am rarely building cultural qualities...

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

In the Worlds and Monsters thread, a few posters lamented the loss of a dragon's innate spellcasting ability. It was suggested that a new thread pop up, so I'm starting one. Doesn't it seem more appropriate to have TREASURE that makes makes things like alarms? Or magical locations? Or...

Are they replacing D&D's blacktop playground with foam?

They did that with Races of Destiny. If you're going to monkey around like that though, you might as well make a new race entirely, like the Dragonborn. Of course, a group of good half-orcs would be more like WoW...

    Necro is IN! Planned Products

I think the assumption people are making is that WotC is "holding back" gnomes, half-orcs, monks and other 'classics' just so they can sell them (perhaps with DDI) later on. There is also the possibility that WotC dropped these classes because they don't want to confuse new players with old...

    Necro is IN! Planned Products

Two Questions for Clark: 1.) Will we see Winter's Tomb on Free RPG Day? WotC mentioned this as the first day to publish. 2.) Have you considered if WotC's license might not let you do something like an 'Advanced Player's Guide'?

So, if I'm reading this article correctly then "out with the old" includes lantern archons and hound archons?
