PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

It's not just marketing. If I tell people I'm going to run an adventure path, they know I mean I'm running a series of modules from first to an end point. It's not an open ended campaign. There will be an overarching plot, developed by a third party, and it will not be something the DM has...

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

It seems like it was always a generic term though. "Adventure Path". Now Pathfinder Chronicles, that seems a little more specific. Or GameMastery. Those brands are solid, no one could confuse them with other products. But "Adventure Path"? Adventure path is a useful term for describing a...

    Dungeon Survival Guide

I ordered this along with Practical Guide to Dragons and Practical Guide to Monsters. My 12 year old son will enjoy all of these.

I wouldn't say they've jumped the shark. They're in reruns. The new season will return next year.

Doesn't anyone else find it ironic that they're fighting to keep this term out of public domain when: 1.) They already have distinct brands to differentiate their products (GameMastery, Pathfinder Chronicles). 2.) The majority of their business is based on using open gaming rules.

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

It's used all over the WotC site, going back to 2001 now that I look around. Some examples: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/881670000 http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/iw/iw20011007a http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/tt/20060418a The term was clearly...

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

Why confuse the community? Why take the term away from Dungeon Magazine in the first place? Why not support the open gaming community by giving us that term to us?

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

It's sacred to Dungeon Magazine at this point I would think. Something that's been taking up 36 issues, 1/4 of the entire print run, is significant. And I love War of the Burning Sky. We're wrapping up Shelter from the Storm right now. I highly recommend it to anyone considering an...

But they are misused. That's the point. The industry, including us as customers, would be better off using a separate term. However, we've adopted Adventure Path before the trademark has been registered. I think it would be better now if we could keep it (both publishers and consumers).

Not to me it doesn't. It distinguishes a campaign in a box published for Dungeon Magazine, which is owned by Wizards of the Coast. "Pathfinder Chronicles", to me, distinguishes Paizo's line.

I pointed that out to them. Here is their response: "For the record, Kleenex is also not a generic term—it's a registered trademark. While the general public often uses the term incorrectly, you won't find anyone other than Kimberly-Clark marketing their facial tissues with the word Kleenex."

OK, I'm in big trouble. Yes, it is open content. Sorry for the alarmism! :D I retract everything bad I said about Paizo and open content. I've edited my comments above. However, I still think the term Adventure Path should also be open. If not, there should be a generic industry...

Of course they don't have to do this. No one if forcing them. I just don't like it as a customer. I like the term, and I plan, as a customer, to keep using it generically. I would hope publishers could do the same.

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

To be fair, that link is to a List made by a fan, not the use of the term by WotC. I just think it's unfair to the rest of the community. It looks like EN World was going to use the term for Burning Sky. And it's a term that as a consumer I can use to differentiate a series of adventures...

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

I'm not saying they're not allowed to keep the term. That's a legal question that I can't answer. But I'm asking why should they persue it? Why not contribute to the community?

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

I thought I had posted it in general originally, then it disappeared and is now in the 4th edition category. Did a mod move it? It's not confusing. It's a term near and dear to Dungeon Magazine now, at least to me. The sequel to Savage Tide should come from Dungeon, and it should have the...

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

They have Pathfinder and Gamemastery, neither of which are embedded into the soul of Dungeon magazine now. (And ironically, Pathfinder was announced right around the time the Pathfinder movie came out. I'm sure that confused more than a few retailers.)

PETITION: Keep the term 'Adventure Path' Open Source!

It's come to my attention over on the Paizo boards that they're trying to make the term 'Adventure Path' a registered trademark. Their staff is trying to prevent all publishers and even consumers from using it to describe non Paizo products. In this thread...
