D&D 4E Monte Cook on licensing (and 4E in general?)

Thank you. I also read tea leaves, but only when you lay them out to make letters. :)

Important! Interview opportunity - what do you want to know about the GSL?

Will there be a provision preventing companies from creating partnerships, or forming other companies, with the intent of keeping alive OGL material that fans may desire? EDIT: Charwoman Gene beat me to it. :)

    Hybrid classes - lazy design?

No more so than if you had two players who want to play Strikers and no one wants to play a Leader. The roles are there to help and to guide, not to act as a hard limit to party creation. WotC's designers obviously feel that certain classes will benefit from being hybrids. We'll have to see how...

    Necromancers and NPCs

I already have made lower level necromancer NPCs with Shadow Volley and Necrotic Bolts. I imagine we'll have a lot of that until the Shadow Power Source is revealed in the PHB2. One of the great things about the way 4E stats out monsters and NPCs is that you can pretty much make the kind of...

    Hybrid classes - lazy design?

It's not that big a deal. As a matter of fact, it's from WotC's preview of the Druid that we first got a look at the Hybrid class concept, so I imagine they will be doing at least a few of them. Remember, by default so far each Class has two Builds to choose from. A Hybrid class could easily...

    New GSL Announcement

I just read Jason Bulmahn's RPG Blog and have to say it's very interesting. I hadn't thought of the potential consequences down the road. I'm not saying he's correct, just that I find his worst-case-scenario a bit disturbing. Here's the text of the blog post:

3rd Party Classes - Wish List

I couldn't disagree more. I would hope that the 3pp's would help fill a bit of the void UNTIL the PHB2. I certainly don't think they should steer clear. They won't have any impact on sales of the PHB2 but could help give options to DMs unwilling to wait another year for some of those Classes...

    New GSL Announcement

I couldn't agree more. The loss of Green Ronin due to the "poison pill" provision we have heard about would be devastating to me. I have Necromancy, have lost Paizo, and now it seems must lose Green Ronin too. One of three ain't bad, but two of three is better, or so my dad used to say.

    D&D 4E What are HPs in 4E?

I'm not changing my descriptions. To me, Hit Points will continue to represent physical injury mixed in with luck/fortitude/endurance, but mainly physical injury. And, no, I haven't had any problem reconciling Healing Surges and non-Divine healing with Hit Points being actual physical wounds...

3rd Party Classes - Wish List

Since the GSL seems to allow new Classes to be created, as per the compilation put up by Morrus HERE, what Classes would you most want to see right away? Which Classes do you want access to in your games, either for PCs or for prominent NPCs? Your wish list does not need to limit itself to 3E...

    New GSL Announcement

It's not that bad of a "fast one" though, IMO. It seems to me that if they allowed that, just so that people wouldn't have to stop selling their old popular products to those fans who want them, the problem would be mostly solved. It would be a good workaround. Maybe they don't want to allow...

    New GSL Announcement

I think you're probably right. For my own preference, I'll take some 4E material instead of none, but would have liked some products from publishers who are unlikely, now, to make the switch. So, that's a bummer. I'm still very interested in how this all plays out. One thing you can't deny...

Monsters are more than their stats

My favorite version of DnD was 2E Skills and Powers. You may put me on your Ignore List now. ;)

    New GSL Announcement

Okay, I just read this whole thread. It's taken me about 12 hours, since I walked away from the computer many, many times to do other things. 12. Hours. I think I'd rather be waterboarded than go through that again. On to the subject at hand. The limitation on previous material, as...

    GSL news.

I don't mind the restriction ... BUT I really don't like that it impacts very popular games like MM, Spycraft, Conan, True20, etc. I wish the clause that prohibits companies from still releasing under the OGL could be made to exclude those games that developed into their own mini-systems. That's...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

That could be so, but I think the explanation is a lot more simple. I think they were addressing the DM's intent giving those +3 greatswords to the ogres. I think they're just saying that if you want to give them a +3 bonus, think about raising the ogre by 3 levels instead so the encounter will...

GSL questions for Scott Rouse and Mike Lescault

I'm not a 3rd party publisher and I don't play 3.5 anymore, so this doesn't effect me that much, but I will say that, if true, it would be kind of sad. Still, I can understand the restriction, if it does in fact exist. I see it as a move to push forward and to limit the remnants of the old...

    GSL news.

I just re-read things and once again was filled with warm fuzzies. I have to admit that I thought the whole thing was going out the door but WotC happily proved me wrong. For which I'm very grateful! I, too, am curious about the restriction on the license to "fantasy". I don't mind it, of...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

I like posting as I read a thread this long because it piles my posts all at the end like I'm a jerk talking to myself. Isn't that great? ;) Okay, one more. I notice a lot of people arguing over possible explanations for what the article means when it talks about the magic item threshold and...
