    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

That's the thing. The NPC DOESN'T loose power when holding a high level magical item. The actual numbers used in play are modified to keep things in a reasonable range. No one, absolutely no one, other than the DM, knows that the NPC is not benefiting completely from a particular item. It's all...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

The reason they don't do that is because the monster may have, in its treasure, a +5 set of chain mail and a +4 greatsword. If the monster has this treasure, he should be using it. HOWEVER, those bonuses will unbalance the monster's stats beyond where they should be. This is one of the reasons...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Sometimes I'm a critic because I see something that I either don't fully understand or because it wasn't properly implemented (as far as we can tell) from my own perspective. I still trust in the system and the designers, who have produced a wealth of powerfully useful material, even if there is...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

Monsters aren't dirt farmers either, of course! ;) Seriously, though, this is very nice. Simple, elegant, and easy to use. Just what I'm looking for when it comes to simple monster changes. Now I just want to see the sections on adding Class levels to monsters AND the sections on making up...

    GSL news.

I am very happy, and very pleased. WotC, thank you for going forward with open gaming. I admit that you had me extremely worried, but this news release, combined with making it free, restores my faith. What was a major hurdle to me has now gone away and I am excited for what the future will...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Oh, I agree with you! :) I'm just a bit surprised (and not with those fringe cases I mentioned) that the exception based power system is going to take a bit more interpretation than I thought. I have some very tactical players so I'm always trying to think of how best to exploit the abilities...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Hell, by the description it would even work on someone asleep, grappled, or even prone. "The War Devil scoops you up and drops you prone near the succubus that kissed you (the one you hate until you're within 5 feet of her where you fill with uncontrollable love instead). As your Rogue friend...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

That's true, but I'm thinking that there will be many new actions possible from magic items already (their primary purpose) so, since I'm going to be magic-item-light, it will balance out. The players, with magic items, will already have, by default, more options available than there are rounds...

Are you going to buy an EXTRA copy of the PHB?

I'm buying myself a copy of the 3 core books, and I've also bought a second gift-set for the other, occasional, DM of our group (as encouragement to DM so I can play!), and I've bought 5 PHBs, one for each other member of the group (6 players, and me, total). I just told them to consider the...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

Utility powers aren't replaced by newer powers. You still remember the ones from before. So, does anyone see anything game breaking with characters remembering their old encounter and daily powers? The more I think about it, the more I think this is going to be a hard line house rule for me.

I thought for sure someone would comment on how many times they said "superheroics" already. It must be too early.

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

I agree. We are going to be gaining new powers from magical items, as they've already said. I don't think it would be that game breaking to let players keep their older powers instead of "trading" them in like they're Toyotas. Probably wouldn't use them much, but they should BE there, IMO.

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

You're probably right, but unless the new powers are clearly built off of the older ones (like natural progressions of the same ability) then I think "forgetting" an old ability when you get a new one is too much of a disconnect for me. It's like a bad Reese's peanut buttercups commerical--they...

Awesome, awesome excerpt. This is great, WotC. This kind of info we can really sink our teeth into and we appreciate it! I love what I see so far. Very, very nicely done. My one complaint is that I don't like losing previous Encounter/Daily powers, but it looks like, upon further reading, that...

I think we need Voss in the WotC thread on this over on their boards: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1017275&page=3 I mean, I think the entry is unclear but some people are convinced it's written in stone and clear as crystal. I think the power entry and the tactics don't match...

A clue on the Charm attack?

Personally I doubt that the Charm tag has anything special attached to it, as much as we've seen it used. It's too bad, though, since that would be neat. Looking at the Beholder article, though, makes me wonder. What if the Beholder's eye ray only mentions that it knocks people senseless and...

    Skill Challenges: Bringing the Awesome

I haven't needed to do any ret-conning when using Skill Challenges. And I think that the actions performed during a Skill Challenge have to be explained, through description or roleplaying, in the context of the event. If a Skill Challenge was initiated revolving around surviving a stampede of...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

The crux, in my opinion, are those three (five?) words, Voss. Interpreted one way, the PC throws himself in front of her to block attacks, but otherwise is like "crap! get me away from this broad!" and the other has the PC actually STAY by her side, protecting her while she uses her corrupting...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Actually, the funny thing is I was looking at the succubus entry and wondering what levels to add to make her more deadly and dangerous and then it hit me: I don't have to do that anymore. (m) Whip (standard; at-will ) * Weapon Reach 2; +14 vs. Reflex; 1d4 + 6 damage and FOLLOWUP. Followup: +12...
