What is the worst "I don't know how my own abilities work" you've encountered in a game?

Serious, not-trying-to-be-glib question: has he read the book? For me, trying to pick up a new game by playing it only goes so far. If I ever want to wrap my head around mechanics fully, I've got to actually muddle my way through the combat chapter at least.

What is the worst "I don't know how my own abilities work" you've encountered in a game?

In complex systems, rules confusions are bound to happen. Sometimes that's down to new player inexperience, sometimes it's laziness, and sometimes it's an honest mistake. In all cases, I generally find it hilarious in practice: case in point. So how about it? What is the worst case of "not...

Why are tieflings so popular? How did they manage to outcompete all the other wacky races to win their place in mainstream D&D?

My own theory is that it's got to do with the popularity of half-demon chicks in bikini mail. Visual aid Of course, the crazy customizability might have something to do with it too. The aesthetics are fun to play with when you've got everything from "elbow spurs" to "antennae" to work with...

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

Banshees are a good example. I made a "wail of the banshee" trap at the end of a Tomb of Horrors style crawl. It was a hard save or die though, and actually kicked off a pretty fun resurrection quest. I guess that my opinion is that they're situationally appropriate, so long as they're crazy...

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

Speaking as a DM, I find that I'm a bit torn on the subject of save-or-die effects. You see, I've been running my guys through a medusa cult, and the risk of oops-I'm-a-rock has added a solid sense of danger to the proceedings. Like I said though, it's an entire medusa-themed level, meaning...

    Friendly Fire

I'd head about the trick of dropping darkness on a tall enemy's head, but for some reason it hadn't occurred to me to do the same with damaging spells. Cheers!

    Friendly Fire

I enjoy big splashy spells. Fireball in my jam, and there's nothing more satisfying than dropping a dazing metamagic acid pit on the enemy. The problem is that my buddies oftentimes get in the way, and the team tends to resent getting blow'd up. Aside from the obvious (looking at you selective...

Do you ever sell off unneeded magic items, or do the bags of holding grow full with the "we might need it latter" stuff?

Could be interesting to combine the first two. Maybe invent a simple in-game version of "let's dice for it" that the PCs play rather than the players.

How do you guys deal with loot distribution? Do your roll off? Sell items and divide the gold? Comic for illustrative how-not-to-do-it purposes.

    Creative Anachronisms

I actually worked on a module that featured a boatload of slime and "municipal slime herds" as waste management. Adventuring opportunities were frequent in that particular city.

    Creative Anachronisms

Do any of you guys like to throw anachronisms into your fantasy settings? If you’ve ever heard of Saonuihun’s Speeding Sphere Game, then you’re already familiar with the principle. Take a modern concept, ram it into the secondary world, and see what weirdness comes out the other end. For my...

    Role-Players vs. Actors

Hey, they can't all be winners. Glad you found one you liked though! The longer this comic runs, the more I realize it should be "funny comic first" rather than "illustrated blog first." That's the goal anyway.

    Too weird for town....

Suppose you've got a dangerous pet. Or that your character concept is "hideous monster." Or that you've chosen one of the races with an image problem, like drow or duergar. How do you deal with it when your PC is too socially unacceptable to go into town? Comic for illustrative purposes.

Do you allow third party material in your games?

What qualifies as "vetted?" Do you mean that you, as the GM, always want a chance to look it over? Or do you mean "it's from a reputable company" rather than "some guy on a forum"...?

    Role-Players vs. Actors

That's about where I come down as well. You can only riff off of straight die-rolls for so long. As a GM, or even as another player in the scene, it is so important to have a vivid mental image of what's going on!

Do you allow third party material in your games? Why or why not? If you allow some into the game, how do you decide what makes the cut? comic for illustrative purposes
