    Role-Players vs. Actors

I've got a comic over here that expands the question a bit, but I'm curious about the community's take on gamers who never speak in the 1st person. I'm talking about players who make a stirring speech or a dramatic eulogy or toast His Majesty’s health by saying, "I make a speech," and then...

    Video Game Dungeons

That's my fear. I think this sort of technique is great for a one-shot or a single specialty session in a longer campaign. If it becomes the whole game though.... Like you said, I could imagine that getting old in a hurry.

    Video Game Dungeons

Have you ever seen a DM steal from a video game when designing a dungeon? I'm of mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it's usually worth a laugh to have to jump lava pits and dodge falling block traps only to realize you're fighting Bowser at the end. On the other, it's tough to do without...

    Accidentally Attacking "Good" Monsters

Comic for illustrative purposes. Have you guys ever attacked a goodly monster by mistake? What did you do when you realized your error?

    Making a Formal Party Charter

Oh I dunno. I've seen at least one group of world-builders do OK at it: https://www.wetanz.com/shop/prop-replicas/the-contract-of-bilbo-baggins

    Making a Formal Party Charter

Have you guys ever used a formal party charter? I'm talking about the kind of in-game document that dictates how you portion out loot, handle resurrection funds, and deal with stealing-from-the-party-treasury types. Is it good policy to include one, or do you think it feels a bit too formal? Any...

Using Minor Magic Items for Major Impact

What are some minor magic items that you’ve used in interesting ways? What conventionally unimpressive items have been put to extraordinary use? Give us your best unconventional tactics! Comic for illustrative purposes.

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

My empathy to your archmage! I just had a big bruiser get blinded in a Mutants & Masterminds game yesterday. I did not have teleport available, and so had to wait out the combat swinging and missing. Not a fun experience.

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened? I've got my story of the world's least impressive lich fight over here. What about the rest of you guys though? Have you ever put a load of time an effort into making a scary encounter, only to have your big bad go...

Have you ever used the "Evil Twins" trope?

Me too, actually! It was my first-ever PC kill, and was super proud of the way it went down. The paladin had gotten sucked up into a vacuum tube, and the rest of the party was futzing around with the trap trying to figure out whether or not they should follow. While the paladin was fighting for...

Have you ever used the "Evil Twins" trope?

What it says in the title: Have you ever seen the "Evil Twins" trope in a game? Have you ever used it yourself as a GM? And more importantly, is there any way to use such melodramatic shenanigans without earning a table-wide eye roll? Comic for illustrative purposes.

Have you ever let your ego creep into your character? Did it turn ugly, or did you manage to check yourself?

Good on you guys for talking it out during the break. It's awfully easy to let the appearance of negativity become the real thing, and taking the time to tap the brakes and make sure everyone is on the same page is the sign of a mature player. :)

Have you ever let your ego creep into your character? Did it turn ugly, or did you manage to check yourself?

I've got a slightly longer write-up on the subject over here, but I've got to admit I run into this a lot during one-shots. The easiest way to build character and set up conflicts is to decide you don't like some other PC at the table. Bickering and petty insults giving way to teamwork and...

Searching Your Inventory: Finding that Silver Bullet

My groups just had one in our last Starfinder session. Facing an undead solarian who is building up energy and preparing to unleash a supernova AoE attack. "Hey guys... I've still got this fire extinguisher in my pack!" It was pretty funny watching somebody spritz down Goku and foil his...

Searching Your Inventory: Finding that Silver Bullet

There is nothing I love more than facing an impossible situation, frantically searching through my character's half-forgotten inventory, and pulling a "silver bullet" item or ability out of my bag of tricks. Has this ever happened to you? What was the situation and what was the item? Comic for...

    Blind to Blindness

What's your setup like? I'm moving from an apartment to a proper house this year, and considering what kind of setup I want for my next table.

    Blind to Blindness

Whenever I'm playing human or dragonborn, I tend to have trouble remembering my lack of darkvision (comic for illustrative purposes). Same deal when I'm DMing: it always seems to slip my mind, and I never remember to enforce it properly. How do you guys incorporate light and darkness at the...

    Drinking Problem

Yeesh. Coming back to this thread a few days later, it seems like we've halfway written a "geek's guide to drinking" recipe book. Actually... ... OK. There isn't a book that officially has that title. It just seemed like something that would already exist.

    Drinking Problem

That's intriguing. A more structured game worked better with drink. Any theories on why that might be?
