D&D 5E (2014) Overpowered Items and GM Expectations

You don't necessarily need magic items in 5e. Mearls famously explained that mess way back in 2012. But with the math behind the system assuming that you receive only the specific abilities and bonuses granted by your character class and race, any little boost in power goes a long way towards...

Starfinder "Dead Suns" in Fantasy Grounds: Worth Switching from Roll20?

Can you run a Dead Suns book on FG without also buying the module? I mean, is it set up to be read and prepped like a standard module, or is it basically just the assets and text boxes?

Starfinder "Dead Suns" in Fantasy Grounds: Worth Switching from Roll20?

I'm contemplating switching my Dead Suns game over from Roll20 to Fantasy Grounds. I'm sick and tired of resizing maps, but I do hate to re-purchase books I already own. So help me out here, Starfinders! Is the Fantasy Grounds experience worth shelling out for, or will it be too much of a pain...

D&D General Do you track material components?

The only time I ever bothered to track 'em was in the beginning part of "Out of the Abyss" in 5e. That's a prison break situation, so any bit of bat guano or spider silk you can salvage is a big deal.

D&D General Do you track material components?

Simple question. Does your group bother to track the use of material components? Why or why not? (Comic for illustrative purposes.)

D&D 5E (2014) How do you make sewer dungeons believable?

Heh. I like that this has a built in "angering the spirits" plot. I know I'd want to haunt the jerks pooping in my grave.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you make sewer dungeons believable?

This is a silly setting problem to have, but it's recently come up in my megadungeon game. Or more specifically, in the small town beside the megadugenon. How do you make sewer dungeons believable? To the best of my knowledge, medieval sewers were little more than open air ditches. Rome's...

Pathfinder 1E Giving 'em What They Want

How do you avoid those disagreements? Is this all "Session Zero" stuff and misaligned expectations, or does it come down to "find a new group" when players and GM seem to want fundamentally different things?

Pathfinder 1E Giving 'em What They Want

Question for all you GMs out there. Have you ever shelved your own preferences and predilections in favor of giving the players what they want? Did it feel like you were somehow betraying your campaign concept, or was it ultimately a good thing for the group? (Comic for illustrative purposes.)

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

Well hey, the new She-Ra turned out to be unexpectedly entertaining. A Princesses of Power game sounds like good goofy fun.

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

Now this is fascinating. What were the circumstances at the con? Did you get an explanation for the ban?

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

Starfinder runs into this a lot. It's a trip trying to portray the shirren.

D&D General Do you allow "crossplaying" at your table? Has it ever caused problems?

I’m using the term "crossplaying" here to describe opposite-gendered players and PCs. I've seen GM responses ranging from, "Why is that even a question? Play whatever you want!" to "Never at my table. It gets too weird." So as a discussion question for all you GMs out there: Is crossplaying...

    Pathfinder 1E Over-Buffing

Are you familiar with the Glass Cannon Podcast? I started thinking about this issue because the GM on that one seems to hate buffing strats, and goes out of his way to let them time out before combat / before multiple combats.

    Pathfinder 1E Over-Buffing

Standing outside the villain's door and arguing about buffs always feels a bit goofy to me. But by the same token, not using all your resources is a good way to get dead. So here's my question: Does "over-buffing" cause legit narrative / pacing problems? Or is there no such thing as “too...

D&D 5E (2014) How to Use "Charm Person" Without Getting Caught

There's a reason The Purple Man is a villain in Jessica Jones.

D&D 5E (2014) How to Use "Charm Person" Without Getting Caught

I'm about to embark upon a campaign as an enchantment-centric character, and this "charm person" business is very much on my mind. Thanks to vocal and somatic components, it seems to me like it's virtually impossible to charm someone if there are witnesses. Is there a smart way to use...

    Hands-On Evil Bosses

What makes you say that? Is it the natural conflict between trying to control the uncontrollable?

    Hands-On Evil Bosses

This one's a question for all the evil PCs out there. When you’re taking orders from an evil deity, mob boss, or Cthulhu-esque cosmic horror, being a good team player can be tough. How do you handle it when you have a “hands-on” evil boss? Do you try to resist their baleful influence, or are you...
