Crothian said it already, but in the episode with Perry White, we learn that Solar Flares have an impact on Clark. Pete and he theorize that the Sun must be where Clark gets his powers... So they've at least touched on it for those of us that know the mythology.

I like that thought, because it would give Clark a fighting chance to stop the "death of a loved one". Because it's one thing if DAD says it's going to happen and nothing can prevent it (as in how Clark had his powers stripped in the first place), but it would be another thing if an evil entity...
