D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Why? Why can’t there be things in the world the players do not know about until they meet it, that would require years of training under a master of that technique in order to be able to do? Like it can’t be realism because IRL there are things like that, so what is the reason?

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yeah I’m lucky that my players don’t care about the mechanics being treated as the physics of the world. If they did, I’d have to explain NPC abilities and remind them often than only someone who trained in the same tradition of sword fighting as the fighter can do the manuevers that the...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

The feature, by the way, says that “you usually contacted your patron via intermediaries”. It DOES NOT say that the patron wasn’t completely capable of waking you up in the middle of the night for an argument about the ethics of burning down a shop in the middle of Luskan because the owner was...

False. Before level 3 the default is that your patron isn’t specified, but no actual rule prevents deciding your patron up front. That is a misrepresentation of the feature. The 2014 had no mechanical weight for the patron at all, while the 2024 version does.

Just as many people say it’s terrible. In reality it’s mid. 👍👍

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

The Judges are Evil. Period. “Cops but 1000x worse” is unambiguously evil. Dredd is a character who would have been a good man in a different environment, and is a great inspiration for characters that want to turn against evil power structures and wrestle with the fact that their power comes...

Right and the most common reason to play that character IME is as someone who doesn’t want to be that (anymore, or never did) dn is trying to use their power/training/tools against the power structure they once upheld.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Talking to my wife today she had the same reaction I do to the idea of Sorcer-King Patron being an inherently “your character is evil” subclass. It’s a dark subclass, absolutely. You are a Herald of an evil power. You’re kinda fantasy Judge Dredd. But the whole point of such a character for...

D&D 5E (2014) Miles per day on horseback: how many?

All of which are better than reality, as it happens. Not an issue for me, but it’s interesting. The average travel speed over long distance on a healthy horse is 25 miles. Less with more weight. It’s kinda too bad D&D healing doesn’t help with exhaustion/fatigue. If it did you could see a lot...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

It’s not even Steampunk adjacent. Airships in D&D are Either “here’s a boat what flies” or “here’s a vessel shaped like a bird/fish/other creature”, nothing remotely like a dirigible. D&D has no actual Steampunk or Victorian elements, esthetically or technologically. Muskets are...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

Nah, they’re both completely absurd things to believe that rely entirely on a wholly irrational mindset. Brennan “The BBEG is Capitalism” Mulligan? Surely not! 😅

D&D General Gladiator = Weapon Master

I’d love to see a few variants that are just as focused as the Gladiator but on a different concept. Like an archer.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I guess I can see that, but it seems like it completely kneecaps any character development that isn’t a huge mechanical pain the butt for such characters, making it basically just not worth bothering to play. Meanwhile, the Templar that works against their patron is an actual story, with a...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

There are people on the internet who think that the world is flat.

I’m confused. Why would “how you get your power matters” being a core theme make it not work?

Not at all. “I’ll kill them with the power they were foolish enough to give me.” Is an extremely good story beat. See; Spawn, Ghost Rider, etc

They put circle magic in the FR book. I doubt they will fail to give wizards a way to defile.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

What else should they do? Force specific stories and make the class suck to play for most people just to satisfy a tiny group of players? And in a meta-physical sense, IMO it makes no sense to have them be “petitioners” that have to be given power every time they do anything. While I’d prefer...
