    Critique my Character Creation Guidelines

We haven't rolled for stats since 2000 or so, so saying that point buy is embraced is kind of an understatement. I've talked to a couple of the players, and they were a bit taken aback by the 38 point buy (I think the average we'd used before this was 28), but I think they'll manage. -TRRW

    Factotum character help

Silvanesti Elf works well, with their Intelligence bonus; also their racial superiority complex. Failing that, just stay away from anything with an Int penalty and you should be golden. Take the Font of Inspiration feat a couple of times to really milk your high intelligence bonus. -TRRW

    Critique my Character Creation Guidelines

NPCs/Monsters aren't getting more HP. Save or Die effects have always been kinda rare in my games, so it's not really that much an issue. I had thought about removing the +2 to two skills feats, but in the end, they don't get taken in a regular D&D game, much less a higher powered one. The...

    Critique my Character Creation Guidelines

Starting up a new Age of Worms game, and would like some feedback from the masses. Note, I'll be running the AP as stated in the modules, except in Eberron. I've got a group of 3 players, if that makes any difference. I've also borrowed some rules from Star Wars: Saga Edition to help make...

What options have you regreted allowing in your game?

The Complete Adventurer version of the Ninja class. It's just... I dunno... Dumb? Sudden Strike is like the little idiot brother of Sneak Attack, I'm not too fond of it. I use the Oriental Adventures/Rokugan Ninja if someone is gung-ho about playing one. Same thing with Samurai; we use the...

    Hexes are cool!

Good for you? Personally, I don't like hexes; they never seemed to work out for my groups. -TRRW

What's your most surprising go-to DMing resource?

I've used Ptolus to great effect in my Savage Tide game. Me: "If you don't stop bickering about (insert issue here), I'm going to beat both of you to death with this [holds up Ptolus menacingly]." Players: "Ok, we'll stop." In all seriousness, Legend of the Five Rings 3e's section on...

Game design that I'm surprised didn't make it into more books

This is why I just use Star Wars SAGA for every genre now. I'll take 10 minutes to convert races and reflavor the classes, then we're good to go. As examples of converted SAGA games, I've run a historical fantasy game, a modern game, a Call of Cthluhu-ish game, and am currently working on a...

Any Warlocks that *didn't* get Vitriolic Blast?

Not "Orb of X" spells cast from a wand or staff. Staves are a Warlock's best friend, because they let you use your full Warlock CL with a rather trivial UMD check at the levels you'll have them. At the Greater Invocation stage, my warlock took the Evard's Black Tentacles invocation. -TRRW

Elmore cover art for final issue of Dragon

I'm torn, because on the one hand I love Dragon Magazine. On the other, I hate Elmore's artwork. Sure, he's a stand-up gentleman, but *gluh*. I understand he's an icon of the fantasy illustration industry, but there are more talented artists. Just because something's been around a long time...

    Coolest Guy at Gen Con

Should've made it in color and actually having the phrase "Coolest Guy at GenCon" on it. Failing that, it needs a slogan of some kind. Maybe "Brian's Shirt" or "WWBD?" -TRRW

SWSE -Making the Dark Side more tempting

Yeah, I'm kinda in the other camp on this one. In most SW games, there's way too many DSPs handed out. I understand that the Dark Side is a real threat to most Force Sensitives, but getting 1 or 2 DSPs for lying? That's just ridiculous. -TRRW

    Wizard Alternate Class Features

We have a magic rope (use activated item, casts Rope Trick once per day, CL 8) so we've got 8 hours of rest. Honestly, though, I don't think I've ever been part of a group that's had more than a day or two of downtime. Our DMs just don't like Item Creation, I think. I'm thinking about just...

    Wizard Alternate Class Features

Well, I do understand the utility of it, but as it stands we're going to have at most 8 hours of down time at a time for the next 5 levels or so. Lots of running running running. I already ditched my familiar for Sudden Shift (PHB2). -TRRW

Either this or Swordsage. Warblade works well for the samurai mentality. Take a few Diamond Mind maneuvers to replicate Iaijutsu. -TRRW
