Holding an NPC under threat of death

You want to see the players rant? Let an NPC do it to them and see how they act.

    Attacking Squirrels in DnD

works fine for me. AC 17 is tough but not impossible. Most of us would proabbly find it to be about that tricky to hit a squirrel. I've killed little mamals with slingshots, bows, slingshots, thrown rocks and blunt objects and an AC around 17 for the squirrel seems about right. Little...

Guns as the weapons of the Elite

I coule only see firearms remaining weapons of the elite if they required a special process to fire ( have to use a 0-level spell slot for example) or if the ammunition was almost prohibitive in cost.

How did guns change medieval societies?

Those missfire and explosion chances are totally insane. Those rules would only work if you wanted to openly discourgae anyone but the suicidal and mad from using firearms. They weren't that dangerous or unrelliable. 5% of people firing a flintlock do not destroy their weapon and harm or kill...

How much are your characters like you?

My characters are not too much like me. I very seldom get the urge to play a bright and handsome artist that women can't seem to keep away from ;) . I'm not overly heroic. If i was an adventurer at heart i'd be a soldier of fortune or a thief not a concept artist/animator raising two kids.

    30th level at 21

Lots of good advice in the thread. There is nothign wrong with a fast rise to fame and power. Mythology hasa lot of such figures. Many gain power and fame quickly and then are destroyed by their own weaknessess and foibles. How to slow level climb (at least in game world time): Make things...

Anybody here play on MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons)

I used to play them and I wrote subroutines and tweaked code for MUDs when I should have been doing something more productive in the computer lab. A long time ago. I was playing chess in a MUD hosted somewhere in sweden at a computer room in the University of Lowell when the first gulf war started.

How long do your battles take

at level 6-9 major encounters that result in a battle can be all over the board 5 minutes to 2 hours. I can usually tell it is goibg hard on the PCs whenit hits round 5.

    Have we lost the dungeon?

""=John MorrowI'm not talking about Metamorphosis Alpha, per se, but about how people were already running their role-playing games in 1976 or so. As I said earlier, Bill Armintrout's article in The Space Gamer #42 makes his game sound like anything but a dungeon in space and he discusses...

    Have we lost the dungeon?

Metamorphosis Alpha was pretty much a giant dungeon in space. That was one of the biggest gripes critics of the game had with it (i think they were grumps MA was/is great) becasue it had metal instead of stone corridors, wolfoids instead of orcs, death moss instead of green slime and so on...

    Have we lost the dungeon?

I'm a big fan of dungeons. If there was ever a shift it was because DMs were trying to replicate modules in thier creative works. Modules were the stuff that was supposed to happen between runs in a campaigns big dungeon. Modules were generally discrete and small (in comparisson to a big...

Psionics: Do you use 'em or did you lose 'em

I like Psionics. I used them to make a culture in my campaign different. The whole crystal flavor text and "hey man, feel the vibes" undercurret works fine for me as it gives a look and feel for psionics that make it distinct. Maybe psionics can muck up a traditional medieval fantasy game...

    Tired of d20 yet?

I'm not tired of D20 and certainly not tired of D&D I've got more then 6 versions of D&D to choose from after all. I never stopped playing other rpgs either- I've played Gamaworld and GURPS and Boothill and others in recent years. I could see getting tired of a campaign or tired of a gaming...

Unearthed Arcana facing variant rules - anyone use?

the genral modifiers and such for facing in the UA work fine but the facing examples for diagonal and head on are off. Some creatures are at an advantage if they are facing diagonally or vice versa, not noticing that and adjusting for it might make combat a little twonky.

Would you spend $100 for a monster book?

If individual entries were all about as good or better then the Monsternomicon and would fit virtually any campaign I might indeed shell out a $100.00 for a 1000 page monster book. I'd certainly have to spend time sitting down with it before I spent those bucks.
