When you have a - for a save, do you automatically fail?

I think Hypersmurf has memorized the entire SRD and core rule books, and can probably recite page and paragraph number for any rules text, as well as the artist of any relevant work of art on the same page. I'm starting to believe he isn't really a kiwi at all, but rather some kind of automatic...

    confusing level 1 wizard dilemna

(Psssst! You shouldn't tell them that! Its secret!)

    My player is squishing everything.

Od course, that should be cold, running water underneath the ice, so he is swept away from the hole. Being unable to move, and laden down with equipment.... I can't see the other party members finding him in time. As any ice diver will tell you, underwater, under ice, it is extremely easy to...

    Constructed Religions

I use a slightly tweaked Greco-Roman pantheon for my Roman-inspired Empire, with some additional Demons & Devils being worshipped by the darker side of society. In the East, the Persian-inspired empire worships a monotheistic death god (an anti-zoaster, if you will). In the far west, the...

    Dragon intrigue without magic possible?

Forget bards, fighters, wizards and nobles. The dragon charms/intimidates/bluffs/cajoles/supports/fosters a stockbroker and his descendants. After a thousand years, he owns the entire planet, if not the entire crystal sphere.

Loss of Innate Spellcasting (or 'How Dragons Build Lairs')

I agree, and I still can't see the big problem. Somehow, Derren assumes PC's have access to all sorts of magical goodies, that were found strewn by the wayside, waiting for them to be plucked by the near-impervious adventurer-heroes, while the dragon which has lived for more than a millenia, has...

    Dragon intrigue without magic possible?

I still think you are arguing for the sake of arguing, rather than seeing valid points that have been made. You can't assume that "there is a lot of magic" for anyone, whether politican or not. And you completely ignore the fact that no amount of magic will weigh very heavy against a weight of...

What a cool idea for a teleport rule! Living Organic matter only! I gotta implement that!

    Dragon intrigue without magic possible?

Que? As in a High Charisma score, with skill ranks in Diplomacy, Bluff, & Intimidate, as well as careful selection of feats renders the low wizard and/or fighter still useless in Diplomacy? I'd disagree with that assumption. While surely an unusual character, and still likely overshadowed by a...

    My player is squishing everything.

    1) I believe you have to teleport onto something capable of bearing your own weight. 2) Falling from a height, I'd require a to hit roll, with a non-proficient weapon, with a -2 penalty for every 10 ft range. 3) He suffers the same amount of damage, DR not withstanding.

    Dragon intrigue without magic possible?

Hmmm.... I get the idea that, after some of the excellent, intelligent posts made by many various posters here (some that have gone to quite some length and detail), certain posters are arguing for argument's sake, rather than seeking cool ideas with which to provide an interesting and cool...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

No it isn't. The power wielded by the DM is only there by consensus of the players, and, therefore, not absolute. The DM doesn't exist in a vaccuum. Playing a RPG by yourself seems pretty pointless...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Then why the equally "obvious" remark regarding a DM's "absolute" power? Apparently, its "obvious", it wasn't so "absolute",....

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Are you denying the fact that DM's are people and are subject to all the failities and weaknesses of humans? Peer acceptance, peer pressure, wanting to be accepted, and the actual fact that players may get up and leave? Cool, whatever. The game, when played, is actually far bigger than that...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

*sigh* As well you might be... Let me explain something, in simple terms. Entering the game, players have certain expectations. These may not be firmly adjusted to the reality of that particular DM's world, but they are there nonetheless. Entering a 2e game, playing by the book, the players...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Ok, 1 point to you! I think it is probably more important to achieve a modicum of balance between similar roles/archetypes than disparate ones. If only to give the choice of exact class meaning.

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

The best thing for me with the upgrade to 3e was the greater character flexibility afforded through feats, & skills, and the sensible save categories (so much more simple!). And, I'll grudingly admit, a d20 roll-high-is-always-good. (but the last one hurts to admit!) The worst thing for me...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Probably. I was never into the P&O books, but even without them, there was all the class books, race books, rules for various settings we handled for 2e... so yes, it could be daunting to create a new character with those options. Still, because the options (mostly kits, & equipment) were more...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Yes. Thank you for your most reasonable and measured response to my post. Now I can comfortably go back to lurking. My major bone of contention is with the mythical mirage of in-game "balance". It never exists in any RPG, isn't necessary nor even desireable. Its sole raison d'etre is to stroke...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

You really should tone down your hype, because its not working as an argument. I completely disagree with your one-handed vs two-handed lopsided analogy. 1e & 2e were far easier (IMO) to wing, prep, & throw together a party for an evening. But then we never used the latter 2e stuff "P&O". I...
