D&D 5E (2014) I think I am going to stop using solo monsters.

The absurdly hypothetical is possible, but can we stick to the topic?

D&D 5E (2014) I think I am going to stop using solo monsters.

Can you point out where in the premise it mentioned 8 magical weapons (that allowed them to ignore probabilities)? I think I missed that part.

D&D 5E (2014) I think I am going to stop using solo monsters.

Now that you mention it... there has to be something else we aren't being told. How did a 5th level party manage to do 189 damage to a Marilith that is resistant to just about everything and has an 18/23 AC? (Meaning they actually effectively did 378 damage) before the creature got to react...

D&D 5E (2014) I think I am going to stop using solo monsters.

Solo encounters work fine, but you have to run them differently... less as dumb meat boxes and more as thinking bad guys. They don't make it to where they are by being meat shields, they obviously have developed some sort of capabilities and tactics. Play them that way :)

D&D 5E (2014) I think I am going to stop using solo monsters.

I ran a solo encounter in my last weekly game. 3 11th level pc's 1 10th's level 1 9th level. The monster was a single CR 14 Demonic minotaur in it's maze. The minotaur could cast fireball 5x a day, wall of fire, chain lightning (as a fire spell), swung a flail made of shortswords, etc...

Take Your First Look At The Upcoming ALTERNITY RPG!

They have kept some of the concept of wounds that way. There are regular, exceptional and critical hits along with stun. The wound system for the new game is really innovative and works very well.

New Dragon+ (issue 12): The Inspiration Issue

One interesting piece I noticed was the lack of level range being noted for Tomb of Horrors unlike the original version. I hope that is in there somewhere.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Mass Combat

This doesn't address the problem... 400 Githyanki Knights can fight an 1000's of Ancient Brass and White Dragons in units of 25? Are you saying 16 Githyanki Knights should destroy an Ancient Dragon flying and strafing? No... Should they be able to defeat an unlimited number of them 1 after the...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Mass Combat

I feel like this should be the Average CR of the unit makes up it's BR, but that has problems also... it's doesn't account for volume at all.

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

This would be while a deer is moving through woods potentially over rocky terrain while I'm hiding? Not dexterity based anymore than any other attack in the same situation.

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

I do a bit of archery myself and would definitely say, as strength of the bow gets lower, dexterity probably matters more. As strength gets higher, dexterity matters a hell of a lot less. The speed of the arrow, the lower trajectory drop off, etc more than compensate for a slightly steadier hand.

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

What could anyone say about a halfling rogue, that is so frantically important, that they couldn't dare check to see if a dozen people already said the exact same thing? :)

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

Can you imagine what would happen to the length of threads around here if people read the thread before replying? At least half the replies on this thread are people responding without reading (because almost every response has been addressed) :)

D&D 5E (2014) The classes that nobody wants to play

And that is perfectly ok, your game, your house rules. We are talking about 5e though, and per the rules, it doesn't support your assertion for what a paladin is, or how they work. 1e/2e paladins were a different game and I would agree with the Lawful Stupid view of them back then. That has...

D&D 5E (2014) The classes that nobody wants to play

In my current OOtA campaign, I've had at least one of every character class played now... some multiples (we have had a notable death count) :)

    D&D 5E (2014) 10HP Bonus for Level 1 Characters. Thoughts?

I think this is interesting, but not for the HP issue at low levels. We tend to have about an equal number of deaths across levels with the exception being that you can raise the dead at higher levels.
