I know OP already got his answer, but to use one mechanic to explain another, it's like getting Advantage on the damage roll(s). Roll what you normally would -TWICE- and take the better of the two.

I had that issue recently that it only showed 1 or 2 msgs at the top, but it said I had 16 out of 20 spaces used. There was a dropdown box somewhere that opened it up to look at older messages and I found 14 more from yeaaaaars ago. I deleted those finally.
