    Yay Failing Book Stores?

I'm sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. B&M stores are perfectly capable of selling e-books. Online retailers already sell massive amounts of paper books. One type of retailer isn't intrinsically tied to one product or the other. If people want paper books in the future, the answer is to buy...

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

Ummmmm.... last time I checked, Amazon sells a whole crap-ton of paper books. I'd say if you want paper books to stick around, keep buying paper books (from whichever vendor suits your needs best).

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

Wrong. The prices are low because of low overhead, massive customer base and high volume. And as I said in the post you quoted, I find brick and mortar stores to be less convenient than online stores. Yes, because online stores have competition; other online stores. As someone suggested...

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

Oh, I care about having bookstores, but I'm quite content with the online kind. If anything, I prefer the convenience of shopping online. The better prices are just icing on the cake.

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

If what I want is great deals on books, those places weren't fulfilling my needs in the first place.

    Yay Failing Book Stores?

Not if what you want more of is great deals on books.

Getting Overwhelmed by "Everything is Core"

My recommendation is, don't worry about buying any books, just renew your DDI subscription if you want new material. If you get a group together, you can even ask some of the players to chip in on part of the ~$6 a month a yearly subscription will cost you.

Adding (or finding) some more swing to 4e combat

Increasing the likelihood of critical hits and the damage that they do is a quick way to add more swinginess to combat. If you want to systemically increase swinginess across the board, halve all HPs. If you really want to increase swinginess, add 1d100 to all damage rolls during surprise rounds.

The silver baton torch stub in T1

IMO, it's simple simulationism. Gygax decided that in his simulated fantasy world, there would occasionally be minor treasures that would be present in already looted areas because they were extremely difficult to find. I don't think much thought was given to whether the PCs would or wouldn't...

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Exactly correct. It seems to me the question is where you want "maximum efficiency" to fall on the power scale.

Dark Sun - Player's Guide rendered obsolete

I think this is a good move. I loved the combo of the FRCG and Monsters of Faerun for the 3e Forgotten Realms (the only 2 books I bought for that line). I thought the Player/Campaign Guide strategy for 4e FR was a really bad choice. As The Little Raven points out, it makes even more sense to...

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

I think "retro game" is probably the correct big tent term, and I've seen that term used more than once in reference to the retroclones and their less clone-like kindred.

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

I would define a retroclone as a rulesystem which replicates an earlier, out-of-print rules system and adheres to that previous rules system as close as legally possible in order to preserve that system in some kind of evergreen format. It's the underlined portion that disqualifies Pathfinder...

    Moldvay vs. Mentzer... FIGHT!

Definitely Moldvay, by far. The Moldvay set retains some of the coolness of the original books. Mentzer is made of bland and fail by comparison.

    This. XP for you.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

I voted yes. The balance isn't the kind that focuses on each class being equal in power to every other class at every level and in every playstyle. However, I do think the authors intended that it be balanced in the sense that every class has something to contribute to the success of the group...

    A 4e Bar Fight...how to do it?

I wouldn't necessarily go the skill challenge route. Instead, I think I'd just tell the players that we'd be making heavy use of DMG pg. 42 and to forget about using most of their weapon-related powers for the fight.

Dungeons & Dragons in E.T. (movie)

You're technically correct. However, the producers originally wanted D&D books in the movie. They wanted to use the term Dungeon Master, they wanted to show the AD&D rulebook covers. The only reason that didn't happen is that TSR turned them down when they asked permission. So while it may not...

How much does the system matter?

I'm at the point where my free time is too valuable to waste doing something I don't really enjoy. As a result, I require both a good group and a system that I really like if I'm going to play an RPG. If I can't get both of those things there are other activities I get more enjoyment out of than...

    Has Lovecraft become required reading?

Seconded, although my recommendations would be The Whisperer in Darkness, The Dunwich Horror or (if you're willing to start with a slightly longer one) The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
