THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Except that they did put effort into it. Perhaps not as much as you wish they would have, but then it was their decision, after seeing the fruits of their effort, that further effort wasn't fruitful. Your insinuation is that there was a reason they didn't put that effort forth, or you're...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

I love your logic. Basically, you're saying they're lying when they say they weren't satisfied with what they had with Gnomes. You're saying they're lying when they present some of the niches they came up with for Gnomes and why they thought those niches weren't up to their standards. You're...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Only the first reason would cause the statement, "Gnomes aren't in PHB1 because we haven't developed them to the standards we set for PHB1 races," to be insincere because then it wouldn't be presenting the root cause of why they're not in the book. The other reasons, while pointing to why they...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Are you assuming a monster manual presentation is as detailed and focused as a PHB one? The developers have stated numerous times that they wanted each PHB1 race to fill a very distinct and exclusive niche. In R&C they stated that none of the niches they came up with for Gnomes were distinct...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Obviously, we are supposed to believe that Dave Noonan is actually Nibenay.

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

If someone says, "the reason why we're not doing A is because we're not satisfied with our approach to A yet," you can generally take the statement at face value.

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

If you bother reading R&C, you see that the problem with Gnomes was that the developers weren't satisfied with any of the niches they came up with for Gnomes because either those niches were too comedy focused or they didn't fit their vision for "core" D&D (tech Gnomes) or they simply did...

WotC: Get Rid of the Tactical Encounter Format

I'd get behind this. It's like the old Dark Sun modules, but better.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

Dude, you are leaping like Superman to conclusions here.

    Starting small in the Realms...

Maybe not Shadowdale, but it should be one of the Dales. They are the heartlands of the Realms.

    Fluff vs Crunch

Orius, good point, but the people it makes things more difficult for are the experienced DMs who are going to be doing their own thing with the rules anyway. On the other hand, the inexperienced, lazy, or just plain bad DMs out there can use all the help they can get.

    H Series and the Realms

Even if they don't, it's probably generic enough to be suitable for the Realms with just a few name changes. It's not like the Realms strays very far from D&D norms, and I doubt that will change in 4E.

    Fluff vs Crunch

Okay AC bonus, but it's still an advantage in combat specifically against Giants. There's just more reason given for it now.

Map of Faerun added to FR Cover?

Yeah, not like the D20 modern stuff. Yeah, apparently.

Map of Faerun added to FR Cover?

Another thing, if they follow the 2 book model, they'll have a lot more room in those 300 or so pages for fluff. Only about 130 pages of the 3E book dealt with actual geography.

Map of Faerun added to FR Cover?

You mean just enough information to tell you how much work you're going to have to do?

Map of Faerun added to FR Cover?

I could have sworn I read that they were getting short overviews, nothing in too much depth, but enough information to help out a DM who find his party suddenly wanting to check out the Dragon Wall.
