Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

You're not using the 4E definition of Martial, which is a power source derived from skill, dedication, and pure physical ability. That's where this concept of "fundamentally non-magic" comes from.

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

At the same time, Batman can outfight Superman, outwit the Flash, and solve any crime put before him. Batman, Green Arrow, and Captain America all make good cases for fighters to have "powers" that put them on par with more overtly magical or mystical characters. With the exception of Cap's...

    New Design and Development: Pantheon

Wasn't his knife called "Rabbit Killer?" On topic, I'm really glad they're doing this. From a generic pantheon standpoint, everything sounds on point. The generic pantheon should be buffet drawn from all D&D IPs. Out of the box D&D should have a pantheon covering all the bases, and that...

    D&D 4E The Great d20 Books that shaped 4E

Hehe, while WotC definitely has had its problems, nothing they've put out has been as horribly half-assed as that book.

    D&D 4E The Great d20 Books that shaped 4E

I would hope WoTC took a look at some of the combat maneuvers in Conan. Let's just hope they don't get inspired by that book's awful proofing.

Points-of-light is not just for post-apocalyptic fantasy

I always thought Lonestar didn't have a huge presence everywhere. The whole point of corporate police forces is that they only protect and serve the neighborhoods that pay. Most poor neighborhoods don't, and thus Lonestar only shows up when something goes boom. E: Also, I'm in the camp that...

D&D 4E Bioware working on 4e Forgotten Realms MMO

Most of the negatives you pointed out were taken care of before the NGE. The NGE's purpose was to make the game a class based WoW clone in space instead of a potentially great successor to the principles of UO in space. Jedi rarity and difficulty of play were not the bad things; they balanced...

D&D 4E Bioware working on 4e Forgotten Realms MMO

The biggest mistake SOE and Lucas Arts made with SWG wasn't the rarity of Jedis. It was the fact that the game was released about a year before it was ready. The game was better for keeping Jedi unavailable.

Classic Dungeons: all of them to exist in the new edition

Not to mention that most of the "negative" changes were the product of Troy Denning's novel series. Bill just added some stuff around the edges.

D&D and World of Warcraft (Not a Rant)

This is my guess/hope as well, since it seems to follow naturally from how Rogues (strikers) and Fighters (defenders) have developed over the course of the game's history.

D&D 4E Bioware working on 4e Forgotten Realms MMO

They did go with Sony Online Entertainment for Star Wars Galaxies, though I believe the development was shared (and if the rumors I heard were correct, that game's ultimate failure rested on the shoulders of the SOE side of the equation). I was an early fan of SWG*, and I played it for about 18...

Classic Dungeons: all of them to exist in the new edition

Umm, Mindflayer pirates on squid shaped sailing vessels in space... what's not redeemable about that? ;)

I'm new around here and never saw it before, and it just gave me the LOLs, YGMD?

Okay, now we've officially gotten out of hand with the acronyms. :)

Classic Dungeons: all of them to exist in the new edition

This, updated to 4E, would be my favorite thing ever. I've run two 2E parties through the campaign and cribbed from it liberally for any 3E campaigns that involved the underdark. I would have to say that I found Night Below to be superior to any other underdark adventure published by TSR or WoTC.

D&D and World of Warcraft (Not a Rant)

It's 15 bux a month, and isn't it a little disingenuous to keep bringing up the DI subscription and its price as a failing point of 4E when it is imminently obvious that you don't need to subscribe or pay that fee to use your books and play the game? I don't see what is so terrible with D&D...

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

You make a good point, but I think the obvious difference is that DMs don't have to rigidly and specifically follow the plot and script in a module or adventure path, whereas the computer must. This severely limits the range of options and actions in an MMO compared to a PnP game.

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

I don't think he's so much seeing something that isn't there as he is seeing something that is there and treating it as bad just because of what it is. There's nothing wrong with D&D learning from what is and isn't successful in the MMO model and applying that to D&D in some way, shape or form...

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

I seem to remember CoH Tanks being able to solo instances scaled for six or seven people without breaking a sweat. Maybe they killed stuff a little slower than Scrappers or Blasters, but they in turn were almost invincible and could wade into fights alone that would have caused entire Tank-less...

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

I'm pretty sure whoever it was got the idea from playing D&D and seeing fighters stand in front of monsters to keep them away from the squishy wizards, who at all but the lowest levels, were the ones doing the real damage. The "tank" archetype has been around a lot longer than any MMO. If you...
