New Legends & Lore (Rules, rules, rules)

Ugh, I voted for the 3rd option but really wish that there was an option 2.5. I could have written the 3rd option much more concisely than he did.

    Iconic 1st level monsters?

I think its best to remember that "level" is a measure of skill and not power. You can have "Level 1" enemies that vary in power without them varying in skill.

10-18-2011 Legends and Lore - Preserving the Past

Mistwell, I think you are reading subtext that is not there. No mention is made about reprinting or restoring old works, but he does talk about reevaluating and remembering things from the past in order to progress forward.

    WotC didn't necessarily save D&D

This is a bit of a misconstruction of the events that led up to the purchase of TSR. No one outside of TSR really knew at the time how bad off TSR really was. The original reason that someone from WotC went to the TSR offices was to talk to them about the possibility of TSR buying WotC out. It...

What is good for D&D as a game vs. what is good for the company that makes it

I do not think that DDI and other digital distribution systems are the godsend you think they are. They are good, they are effective, but they are simply an alternate distribution system to physical books. They will not stop designers from needing to create a new edition every so often because...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

Yeah, because you enchanted the characters instead of the items.:erm:

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

That screams of entitlement. Plus in the real world not everyone can get the equipment that suits them best and end up having to work with good enough. In the US Military there are a large number of soldiers that could be highly effective with weapons such an M249 SAWs or M82 Sniper Rifles, but...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

They are not talking about ignoring magical items effects on things, but creating a base line built around +0. From here there are a lot of things they can do. One of those things is to create augmented baselines factoring in the various bonuses from magical items. From those different baselines...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

Baumi. Yes, he is talking about removing the +X bonuses from the leveling math, but he is not talking about removing +X items from the game. Currently 4e D&D uses a formula similar to the following to determine the expected attack bonuses for PCs: Expect Attack Bonus = (1/2 Level) + (Weapon...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

Monte isn't talking about getting rid of +X items. He is talking more about getting rid of Wealth by Level guidelines.

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Oops, left out the who of it. The first was a Private in basic training and the other was a Sergent goofing around off duty. The human body can take huge amounts of damage before it can not work. This amount is pretty constant across everyone. On the other hand it takes an amount of damage that...

New Monte Cook article Magic and Mystery

Did Monte Cook read my Why I don't like Wealth by Level thread? Because He used 2 of my reasons pretty much verbatim and then ask a question pertaining to a 3rd.

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

The reality is unrealistic. I've seen 2 people take the same type of injury with the same level of severity and watched one instantly pass out and the other say "Ouch," and then drive to the emergency room on their own. They were both first time shoulder dislocations.

What's wrong with scaling (and levels, bonuses, advancement, etc)?

I'm talking more about player psychology than statistics. In 4e due to the way attack rolls and defenses are set up, hits and misses are based around a number on a d20. In most classes this reference number is ~11, though there are a few classes(Rogue) that this number gets to around 6. When...

What's wrong with scaling (and levels, bonuses, advancement, etc)?

I don't think he did. In 4e the effect of bonuses on rolls to hit are often invisible while the effect of bonuses on damage rolls are. If you need a to roll an 11 to hit something at level one, by the time you get a +[i]n[/n] weapon enemy defenses have increased so that you still need to roll an...

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

Looking at the pictures of rooms 19 and 21 gives you a completely different perspective on them than the ones you get from descriptions the DM descriptions. It had slipped my mind that this adventure has no descriptive flavor text. When running this adventure the DM is just supposed to show the...

    The "That's Unrealistic!" Retort Compendium

But the guy was also doing something akin to skeet shooting. He could most likely get a better RoF if he didn't have to acquire a different target after each shot. Imagine him shooting at a stationary target.

This is a tournament-ism. When you play a module in a tournament you have a limited period of time to complete it.

Iconic Dragon Encounters of Classic D&D

Dragonlance would have most of them I think. If I remember correctly the lack of dragon encounters in adventures was what led to the acceptance of the Hickmans' Dragonlance proposal by TSR.
