    Appendix N redux

I think a few Anime Series need to be in the Appendix: Records of Lodoss War Slayers Louie the Rune Soldier The Legend of The Legendary Heroes

Top end of +N weapons and armor?

Jerome, you worded the question poorly, because the way it is currently written it is easy to parse the question as to be asking: "What is the highest bonus you want to see magical Weapons and Armor having in D&DNext?" No where in your original post do you imply the question or the answers to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should the +1 Sword Exist in 5E?

I think it is kind of funny that 3.X kind of "killed" the magic of the +n bonus. Prior to 3rd edition, a +1 bonus to hit and damage was an incredible bonus. When you think about it, only 1 in 54 characters got a +1 or greater bonus to hit with melee weapons from Strength. Dexterity was a...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

My point still stands. In fact you brought up one of the arguments that lead to the Oberoni fallacy being formulated: Crit Immune creatures are not a problem for Rogues, because the DM doesn't have to use them. Pre-3.X characters, especially Fighters, had a lot more power than most people...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

Isn't this a variation of the Oberoni fallacy? "Characters are dependent on magic items" is the proposed problem and "use appropriate(lower level) challenges" is the rule 0 reason it isn't a problem. Common understanding holds "magic item dependance" to refer to the tendency of the 3.X and 4e...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

I really don't like it when people say that good items are only for high levels. I think of +X bonuses as a quality indicator. The difference between a +0 mace and a +3 mace is the difference between a knotty wooden club and a flanged steel mace.

The Return of the Sneaking Man

It sounds to me that you guys want Rogues to be sneaky dirty fighters. You want to play ninjas, thieves, muggers and pirates. You want to be able to sneak up behind someone and stab them in the kidneys, take cheap shots at your opponents crotches, throw dirt in their eyes, use poisons...

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

I mentioned in another thread a possible way I could see D&DNext working out. I do not see the Basic version of the game giving the customization some of you are looking for at the start, but I do think that it may become available in a latter "Advanced" module. Consider this: The basic rules...

Legends and Lore - The Genius of D&D

I think Monty got the priority of things correct, and nothing he said makes it impossible for the list to end up looking like this after a few "Advanced," "Unearthed" or "Player's Option" modules: Class Sub-Class Multi-Class Theme Race Species Culture Environment Ability Scores...

Does anybody else miss 1st L Characters

Numbers are relative. 40 hp at level 1 in one game may seem like a lot at first glance when compared to 8 hp at level 1 in another, but if the first game assumes that the average level 1 attack deals 10 damage and the second assumes the average level 1 attack deals 2 damage those original hp...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

Are you aware of what having a 15 in a stat got you over a 9? Because this is one of the major differences between pre-3e D&D and post-3e D&D. Str: +20 Weight allowance, +80 Max press, +3 Open doors, +6% Bend bars/Lift gates Con: +1 HP per level, +25% System shock, +24% Resurrection survival...

    Making DnDN Popular

How a module gets priced and published should be determined by its individual size and scope. A module made up of 100 hireling personalities makes an effective Dragon Magazine article or online bonus, while a module containing the rules for building and maintaining a variety strongholds should...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

What is and what should be the minimum score a character needs in a stat in order to be an effective member of a specific class? What do players believe is the minimum effective score? Can a character be played effectively if they have ability scores of 10 10 10 10 10 10? Those are the questions...

    In Defense Of: +X items

What says we have to have only 1 baseline for monsters, and that that baseline alone has to account for magic item bonuses? Why not have multiple baselines? Consider this: We could have 6 baselines, a "base" baseline for creating monsters that would be a fair challenge to characters with...

Which video games should and shouldn't influence it?

I mentioned some of my thoughts on this in a post I made in another thread. I believe that this mentality is quite wrong. You have to know what genres to look at to find the actual treasure. Dungeon Crawlers, like Wizardry and Might and Magic, and Traditional JRPGs, like Dragon Quest and Final...

D&D 5E (2014) What can D&D [next] learn from other games?

I think they should go beyond other tabletop systems and look at videogames (but not MMOs) as well. Look to turn based JRPGs, such as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, for ideas on encounter design and boss fights. Consider how many encounters are gone through and how they are individually...

Legends and Lore - What Can You Do?

Ugh... Monte missed the actual problem. The primary cause of combat slow down is not the number of actions, it is the number of choices and the complexity of those choices.

    Spell lists vs. story needs

There is a big difference between combat magic and non-combat magic. Throwing fireballs, making the floor slippery, creating protective force-fields, and short distance teleportation are all forms of combat magic, while granting the ability to breath underwater, see far away, detect metals, long...

Legends and Lore 11/22/2011 - A Different Way to Slice the Pie

The "complexity dial" I want to see exists less in "How much do I know?" and more in "What do all these things on my character sheet mean?" For example how I see a complexity dial possibly working for movement: Low: Distance is measured in 3 steps Far, Close and Melee. One move action changes...

A new Tier System for 5E

I'm a fan of the idea to disassociating a character's "skill level from their power tier. I feel that associating certain power levels with various level sets unnecessarily limits the game's design and play space. In my mind 20 "Skill" levels is an appropriate amount to design around. I...
