D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Well, kinda. It's more occidental vs oriental . . . but practically, amounts to the same thing. Othering the non-Western world as "exotic".

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

So, some folks think these issues matter, but they don't? Because you don't think they matter? Or, rather than sincerity, it's fashionable to be more inclusive?

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Sigh. So . . . not all Asian folks find the use of the word "oriental" problematic, but many do. So, it's not problematic? Do ALL Asians need to find the word problematic for it to be so? And we're back to not all Jewish folks find the use of phylactery in D&D problematic, only some. So it's...

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

Dragon Fist was released in between editions but is very D&D adjacent, essentially a hybrid of 2E and 3E mechanics. Nothing really from Alternity.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

You realize that almost every word that is considered inappropriate, rude, problematic, or offensive started out with "no pejorative meaning", right? Words gain pejorative (or problematic) meaning over time as one group uses them against another. Like "oriental", for example.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Now we are moving on from litigating "phylactery" and re-litigating "oriental"? Okay. Thank you WotC, for removing the words "phylactery" and "oriental" from your products.

Go big or go home I guess. :D

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

That reminds me, I really need to get started on a Rick & Morty inspired D&D game, I hope my group goes for it!

Lore-neutered? Okay. Welcome to ENWorld I guess.

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

I'm not sure I get you here . . . the micro-settings in Radiant Citadel do not appear in other products.

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

How is that related to @FitzTheRuke's point?

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

Kinda missing the point by being pedantic, are we? Which edition had more settings, 2E or 5E, depends on how you count . . . but the actual point still stands. 5E has published a lot of settings and it hasn't killed the game. The "common wisdom" that too many settings killed 2E is false, it was...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

So sorry you are tired. So sorry WotC and other companies have listened to folks and removed problematic terms and concepts. You suspect Jewish and non-Jewish folks who are offended (severely or mildly) are outliers. Suspect. Okay. I'm tired too. Of folks pushing back against reasonable...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Does there need to be consistency? For a while we had a degree of consistency, since most of the OSR and other fantasy heartbreakers borrowed so heavily from D&D. But if different games are using different words for a lich's soul box or to describe a character's ancestry, is that a problem? I...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Are you Jewish? If so, do you represent all Jewish people? If you personally do not find the use of phylactery offensive, then no Jewish people do? Or since not all Jewish people do, it doesn't matter? Multiple entertainment companies producing fantasy media and games HAVE listened and HAVE...

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

If they are writing/designing/world-building FOR WotC, why should they retain any rights? If, as a creator, you want to retain the rights to your work (which is reasonable) don't do work-for-hire.

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

I'm surprised it took them this long to build a focus on world-building. The worlds and characters of D&D give Hasbro and their partners something to build off of to "monetize" the brand . . . video games, movies, tv shows, and merch. It's the same relationship the comics have between Marvel...

Wizards of the Coast Releases Day 1 Errata for Monster Manual

Some smaller game publishers do just that, release a digital document to crowdsurfing backers, ask for feedback, then go to print. And guest what? They STILL have errors. Every time. Probably a lot less than they would have had otherwise, but you will never escape printing errors and errata...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

No. No, it's not. Sigh. Cultural appropriation isn't a binary thing, always okay or always wrong. Taking something from another culture that is sacred and using it out of context or in an elf game is the bad kind of cultural appropriation. Like the use of phylactery for a lich box. Knowing...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Yes, really. Even the illustration you chose is similar in concept. A box with mystical or sacred writing within. Yes, the problem is the word (or name) and how it evolved to more closely resemble the Jewish phylactery over time. It's both. No need to blame anyone, Gygax or otherwise. Like so...
