D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

I think the OGL thing was only a big deal because a lot of people were ready to jump on WotC about something. It was leaked and never actually enacted. And more importantly, rules cannot be copyrighted so it didn't actually apply to a lot of the things people think it would apply to. The...

Yeah, like - "Have you checked out the new DMG? It is a great introduction but if you are hungry for something more check out our book too!"

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

Quality over quantity. I actually can't keep up with 3rd party publishers. I've tried a couple out that were well regarded but found their stuff just wasn't thought out well. WotC isn't perfect but the design is usually consistent with the edition. Not saying one is better than the other as I...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

A more charitable interpretation is that it is meant to reduce the cognitive load of new players, esp. new DMs. All these things are still possible to tinker with, it's just not expected that a new DM learn how to tinker with them to just get the first game going. In the end I think the...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

If it didn't have the 'never let players know' bit at the end I would still not think it was great advice but would be largely indifferent about it. All that needs to be done is to establish in session 0 that you're sometimes going to put your foot on the scale to better achieve the table's...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

It's fine for the table to agree during session 0 for the DM to avoid character death or generally make the game easier in one way or another. It's entirely different to lie to the players. Just don't lie to your friends. It's not nice.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Pg. 17 Hidden Die Rolls: Hiding your die rolls keeps them mysterious and allows you to alter results if you want to. For example, you could ignore a Critical Hit to save a character's life. Don't alter die rolls too often, though, and never let the players know when you fudge a die roll.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

The only thing for me is in the DMG the bit about telling the DM to change what they roll and lie to the players about it. But that is DMG and not PHB.

D&D 5E (2024) Making and Selling Potions for Fun and Profit?

The rules for selling at half price only apply to equipment. The DMG has rules for selling magic items and it does not specify that they are sold at half price. It just has suggestions of prices and leaves it up to the DM. Using the DMG guidelines a Potion of Healing is worth 50gp to sell...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

For me it is a feature that if a PC is a farmer wizard they will stand out as someone different as there aren't many of them (and there should be more sage wizards than farmer wizards). This is the background having a real effect on the game that supports the character's identity.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

Yeah, this is a world where people gain ability points as they get experience. Nobles don't have higher cha or int because they were born that way. It is because they spent their entire lives learning things that Nobles can do because they have money for teachers and the time to do it. It even...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

I've tried out too many players who gave off yellow flags when discussing the game with them that now I just tell them they won't be right for the game. Just better that way because once they are in the game they can just ruin the vibe even when ejected. So in that way it sort of is on the DM...

D&D 5E (2024) Set ups for tables where not everyone can purchase the book?

We have 2 copies of the PHB for 6 people and find that to be plenty during play. For character creation it is a bit messier but was fine.

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

That's great. I think I will make them d100 lists and then print it off.

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

Previous MM was 352 so we're not getting as many more pages as we did in the PHB and DMG but still 32 more. I wonder if it will have more stuff in there with tables and advice and lore and such or just more space for monsters. I'm not sure how many monsters could be trimmed from the MM. As I...

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

Just a clarification, while I agree, it is a 384 page book just like the other 2 core books but with over 500 monsters which is where you would have gotten that number. Still, I think they promised more artwork than previous books? And I bet I'm really going to like the style.

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

Yeah, I can't help myself from getting involved so I just block. It also makes it much easier to catch up on threads as it makes them shorter. I'm not missing the person's comments who hates the games I play.

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

Yes, the 'cash grab' that is providing an artistic product that people want to buy. That's making things. The term 'cash grab' is used as a pejorative to imply that they are 'grabbing' cash in an opportunistic or deceitful way.

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

I'm not sure I got that idea from what I've consumed. I've usually seen commoners depicted as making offerings and prayers to whatever deity represents the thing they're going to do. Clerics on the other hand, yeah. But then they still don't fight with other deities who share the same ideals...
