XP: When and how do you decide the value of an encounter?

In general, I write up an XP value as I write the encounter, using the published material for the system. However, I will adjust these values upwards if it turns out that there was a great deal of synergy built into the monster types, terrain, etc, which make the encounter harder. For example...

New character for a new player

Good point, On Puget Sound - note also that the Shaman's companion can fill a similar role. In our party, the shaman personally stays in the back line while keeping her companion on the front lines with the fighter and the warden.

    Can we eat that?

We had a half-orc monk who ate pretty much everything the party killed. It became the running joke of the campaign, as he'd offer it to the paladin, the prissy cleric, and the bespectacled goody-two-shoes mage, none of whom wanted anything to do with anything he'd eat. He got a ton of great...

New character for a new player

I'd add to the general comments: I have a new-to-tabletop-gaming player in my campaign. She's playing a human sorcerer. She loves it. She's a long way away from "optimized" and doesn't tend to focus on the forums, but she picked it up right away and she loves the sorcerer's flexibility...

Come and get it and vertical pulls

Yeah, but KD, that's an easy fix. Explicitly set your Dragons to be immune to Pull, Push, and Slide powers, or to have something akin to the Dwarvish resistance (reduce by 1 square), maybe "reduce by 3 squares" for a Dragon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you consider 5th edition?

Nope. I turned off avatars. On-topic, I've played Basic D&D, 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and 4e. Each time a new release has come out, I've been "disappointed" with it, much as Kzach described, but given it a chance, and found things that I loved in it plus things that I dislike, and I've...

    Warlock/fighter opinions and instructions...

Thinking about the long-term build of this class, do we want to recommend Paragon multi-classing? I've actually never seen a class built down the Paragon multi-class line, so maybe I need to play with that in CB just to see what it feels like. Anybody who has played one care to comment? If its...

    First Campaign as a DM

There is an issue there, a couple minor ones: 1. If your characters have only one encounter per day, they learn to "go nova", blamming out, in order, their dailies, action points, and then their encounters. They'll be able to consistently fight at +2/+3 from first level, and +4 to +6 once...

Help me select powers for a soulless guy.

p.s., the lads over in the 4e Fan Creations and House Rules section may do really well with this - a guy just posted "the other half" of this, e.g., a zombie reanimated by stealing somebody's soul and slapping it into the zombie's body, complete with effects on the still-living body the soul was...

Help me select powers for a soulless guy.

Mmmm... I like the black-hole-of-souls effect, its much what I was thinking too: 1. psychic/necrotic, feeds on somebody's soul, hits for damage, gains temp HPs or regains real? 2. immune fear effects - or what about even a reflects a fear effect? Encounter power, immediate interrupt, when a...

A question for DMs more experienced than myself - aka everyone

Jydog, a couple thoughts. 15 sessions played is plenty of experience to think about running your own session; a one-off session is perfect as you don't have to worry about your incorrect rulings setting a lasting precedent that break a game world. DM'ing is kinda like dating: approach it with...

    Combat actions before combat?

Mmm. We may have to agree to disagree, because I find myself disagreeing with your three issues. :) I don't agree; I think there are plenty of reasons why that "works" for me: parrying a weapon, moving within my (much larger than me) 5x5 square... etc. I don't agree. It takes two to tango. If...

    Two-Handed Staff feat?

Hey, I'm a DM with two relatively novice players at 3rd level, one bard, one sorceress, each wielding a staff as both weapon and implement. Can you please re-cap, maybe a paragraph each, the major arguments for and against, and break down the builds a little bit more? I'm following, but not...

Keeping all players satisfied... all the time

One of my players, who is our "other" DM, complimented me on something I hadn't noticed I was doing, but which he observed: I've been switching the "camera focus" to the character of whichever player seems least interested in the game at the time: describing the scene through their character's...

    Skill Challenge Clinic

Well, by RAW there was no penalty for not-attempting, just for failure, so it actually made sense to "sit out" if a skill challenge doesn't suit your character. Which is fine, for some challenges: my fighter should neither be contributing to nor harming the attempts of the party wizard...

    Skill Challenge Clinic

Ewwww! Cockroaches! I hate cockroaches! I like #3 as well. I'd also describe each "Failure", especially the "Failure to act" failures as "some nameless NPC falls to the vermin and dies"... putting just enough character (description) into the NPC and the manner of his/her death to make the...

So... why exactly can you not take actions after a charge?

Mmmm. Yes, I see. I suspect half of your cases would be cases where the "specific trumps the general" - e.g., the Swift Charge, the Curse/teleport, etc ... but yeah, my wording turns out no better. Hrmph!

Come and get it and vertical pulls

By RAW, no: I don't have the page handy to quote from - Edit: Oh, thank you, Flip-ninja!!, but essentially effects which Push, Pull, and Slide can only do so in the horizontal plane, not the vertical. By RAI, I'd say sure: the fact that your dragon was flying shouldn't nerf the fighter's...

    Combat actions before combat?

.. Apologies; I hadn't meant to get personal with you! I simply meant that post as a reply to the part I quoted after "I still find it strange.."; I was trying to address the "fluff" more than the "crunch" in that last post. MMmmm?? .. I think you're putting words in my mouth. At no point...
