So, any consensus on PHB2 powerhouses?

A Fighter/Strength Cleric combo would be better. Healing is better than a warlord. Divine Power is amazing at high heroic/paragon. Str/Wis is better than Str/Cha for a fighter. Warpriest is a solid paragon path (bonus AC, nice powers). If you mark using the warpriest ability and a foe tries...

So, any consensus on PHB2 powerhouses?

The main reason that [W] powers are outstripping implement powers is that you can spend multiple feats to make your weapon powers better (i.e. you can spend feats to get superior weapons) and there are weapon powers that allow you to attack the same target multiple times, allowing you to stack...

Familiars - can someone give me a quick overview?

But if that paladin reaaaaally wants that familiar, he can multi-class into warlock or some other arcane class and then take the familiar feat, since the MC feats allow you to be considered as being that class for purposes of abilities and other feats.

Familiars - can someone give me a quick overview?

They have an active and passive status. Passive means they can't be attacked and gives you a marginal bonus (bonus to skill, extra language, etc). Active means they can affect combat in some meaningful way (i.e. attacks can originate in their square, foes don't have concealment when adjacent...

So, about defenses aka. PHB2 defenses feats

Wait, who said that monsters should only have a 50/50 chance to hit at higher levels? PCs have even more ways to heal, often without taking up surges, as they go up in levels. If anything, monsters should hit MORE often if you want to keep the balance. And high level combats don't take 10+...

    PHB 2 power creep

That's the thing. BRV doesn't ignore half the damage thrown at them. If you build them like a regular fighter, then it's around 3-4 temps per melee/close attack. That doesn't include ranged, area or ongoing damage which are a significant source of damage as you go up in levels. That for a 5%...

    PHB 2 power creep

That was my initial argument, but we got sidetracked regarding the merits of Battlerage vigor vs PHB1 options. I've seen a Warden in play in both heroic and paragon levels. They're fine and have a lot more controller options, but the Fighter is still stickier as a defender.

Healing Belt in MIC = broken?

Love the comparison of the college tuition and the cars. But yeah, I think it was actually in the foreword of the MIC where the designers discussed the reasoning behind the pricing of the items. The core items (stat enhancers, resist vest/cloak) were the baseline items. They wanted to price...

    PHB 2 power creep

Yeah, it really helps in increasing staying power. No arguments there. But the question is though, does the fighter need it? Is it worth lowering average damage per round by around 10% and reducing the chance to land with OAs, dailies and encounter powers by 5%? There aren't that many ways...

    PHB 2 power creep

And the ability to stack temp HPs from invigorating powers. Something to consider definitely, but it's not a clear cut case of "better" which someone claimed earlier.

    PHB 2 power creep

How would you feel if you found out that Expertise was actually in the design of the game from the very beginning? I totally agree here. It just felt that some aspects of MP was not playtested properly. There's some powerful stuff. But there's also a lot of powerful stuff in the core PHB1.

    Get Familiar

Well I'm pretty excited to see the official rules :) I'm just disappointed that the familiar rules didn't include options for inanimate objects with intelligence, like a talking sword or hat. I suppose it's easy enough to houserule though.

    PHB 2 power creep

The straight fighter will have higher AC (unless the battlerager decides to ignore half of its class feature) that is effective on melee and ranged attacks. The +1 to hit is actually a pretty big deal. 5% more chance to hit with powers that affects your role as a defender. Sticky is not just...

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

What!? Gnome is in the PHB2. And the underpants paragon path for gnomes was in the April 1st edition of Dragon.

    PHB 2 power creep

Well, I too play a lot of LFR. I've got 10 characters now. I also DM a lot. I DMed Escape from Sembia 12 times at one con almost a year ago and have pretty much DMed and played nonstop since. I don't see the powercreep you're talking about. Other than fixing controller at-wills, I just...

Forked Thread: [Ryan Dancey's D&D Death Spiral] - D&D doomed to cult status?

And despite biting more off than they can chew, WotC IS actively courting the youth market. That's partly what this whole online initiative is all about. They failed in some parts, but succeeded well enough in others that I'm confident that they won't be left behind when we're all hooking up...

    The iPhone Will Kill D&D

I know, right? You can't exactly fling your iphone at annoying players like you can with dice. Well...I guess you can. But you would probably need to keep replacing your iphone.

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

Interestingly enough, this discussion very much parallels the newspaper comic industry and the webcomic industry. One relies on the tradional publishing means of monetizing and the other relies on a freemium model, where you give away the primary content for free and make money off fan support...

Help for a non-tactically minded GM?

Yeah, asking the players for advice, even during combat, might work. Also, I've found that a lot of times, just concentrating fire on one player that doesn't have an unbeatable AC helps put the PCs on the defensive. And there's something to be said for being exposed to different playstyles and...

    Dungeon tiles. yay or nay?

I like the look of Dungeon Tiles, but the actual use of them in play is such a headache as others have pointed out. Not only do they tend to move around unless you secure them, but unless the DM takes the time before the game to organize them, setting them up can take a bit of time. I used...
