    D&D 4E 4e game suggestion request

Your idea of training to get special weapon qualities (i.e. Vicious) is an interesting one, but you have to be careful to put limitations on that. A character that is able to train into several different weapon properties would be very unbalanced because they would essentially have weapons that...

    New status effects?

Befuddled - limited to at-will powers. Dizzy - lose move action and can't shift.

Game Fundamentals - The Illusion of Accomplishment

Ego gamer is a loaded term. It can mean as you described it (someone with the primary goal of "winning" an encounter). But it can also mean the person who is so self-involved with staying true to their character's persona that they act in ways that are detrimental to the party. The coward...

Can a pit trap affect multiple PCs?

It affects as many people as you think it should affect. You can change the trigger condition to activate the trap when more than one person is on it, after 2 people have walked on it, or when a monster in the same encounter activates a lever trap, etc. Whatever you think is fun. But for a...

Dwarf Bard: Hammer as implement possible?

Another quick and dirty way is to go Hybrid Bard/Warlock (PHB3) and use the hammer in AV that counts as a warlock implement. Hybrid rules allow you to use the same implement for both classes, so I think that can pass.

When status effects annoy the players

Yeah, pretty much what most people have said. PCs have such tremendous resources available to overcome these status effects that if it really bothers them, they can easily devote some items, feats or powers to overcome them With that said, I've found that at paragon and epic levels, leaders...

San Jose, CA - New Player Seeking Group

A local game shop, Game Kastle - Hobby Games & Collectibles, hosts 4e D&D several times a week. Might want to check them out.

    Encounter Level - realistic maximums

You know those people that complain that 4e feels like a grind? They're the ones that are throwing encounters of +3 or +4 against the party. The higher you go up, the worse it gets until you hit TPK territory.

So a Ranger and his bear walk into a tavern...

For strange races, I tend to base people's reaction similar to how the comic book character Hellboy interacts with people. People who don't know of him are scared when they see him because of his demonic appearance, but his adventures have made him a hero and he has gained some measure of fame...

So a Ranger and his bear walk into a tavern...

Heh. What a coincidence, I was just thinking about this very thing the other day... Another thing to consider is how dangerous the adventurers themselves look like. If it's a drow, but dressed in the raiments of the goddess of peace, they'll probably get a better reception than someone in...

    Star Paladin Hybrid

Also certain swords are able to be used as arcane implements and you can use those. A pact blade for one can be any light weapon (rapier, shortsword). There's a paragon level one that can be any heavy sword (forget its name, but it's one of the ones that's part of an item set in AV2).

    Would "elite characters" work?

DMG2 also introduces the concept of companion creatures. Basically, a character that you can play in addition to your regular PC. But they they use stat blocks similar to monsters, so they're not as complicated.

    Would "elite characters" work?

I dunno. It seems much simpler to just adjust the encounter xp budget for 3 characters than mess with the core numbers.

Healing Word Question (Completely new player)

A special case exists for someone who's dying (0 hps or lower). Even if you don't have a healing surge to spend, any healing grants you 1 hit point and you become conscious (page 295, PHB).

People who read games but don't play...are there more than me...

This was me for most of high school and college. I just didn't have people nearby that wanted to play. I still bought most of the rule books though and read them for fun. After college, I found the RPGA and was able to play regularly. Having a shared-world campaign means I can play whenever...

    Vision and Light question

Except that if you carry a source of light, you cannot stealth (see Stealth). The rules also doesn't state that a PC has to eat, so PCs can't ever starve in the game! Sorry, that logic fails. Common sense does provide 90% of what is needed to run a game. Otherwise, the rule books will be...

    Tigers Leap vs Bounding Leap

Yeah, it seems like both do the same thing, just worded differently. As for the point of having a power that is very close to an existing power...well, the skill utility power is a lot easier to get access to. You don't have to be a Barbarian (or multi-class into Barbarian) to be able to use...

    Meet Poof, my Warlock/Sorcerer hybrid

I don't know if it's just me, or maybe I've been watching a bit too much BBC, but the word Poof has, um, certain other meanings across the pond in Britain. Urban Dictionary: poof

Does A Rod of Corruption Really Work in the Off-hand?

From Wizards of the Coast: "18. Can a Warlock benefit from holding two rods? Yes, a warlock can gain the properties from two rods but he still can only use one to make an attack." Found in their FAQ section of the PHB. FAQ for the Player's Handbook! However, just remember that errata...
