Penny Arcade on 4e Naming Conventions

Oh, Gary, you brought so much eloquence to the game, and improved the vocabulary of so many young people through three decades of gaming. Now your successors stumble through the language like drunken rhinos. They slap together campy, juvenile portmanteaus like they had never seen a thesaurus...

Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

Indeed, the referenced "base line" involves a single game. If I were to try to present a sample size of 1 as representative of anything, for any reason, they'd laugh me out of the university. So, we have a story about a single game by an indie developer that is suffering from high rates of...

    Ema's RPG Sheet Website down...

Well, actually: According to the site operator, WotC made him take down his fansite. I think it's safe to assume they threatened legal action in the event of non-compliance. That means that they literally did "take down a fansite." edit: Fortunately, his character sheets are still available...

    Ema's RPG Sheet Website down...

Dirty pool. This fan site has been contributing to the D&D community for ages, and by threatening it, WotC is spitting in all our faces. This is a bad move, and I find it hard to believe that it was perpetrated by the same people who have shown our community so much goodwill and support. The...

Okay. I officially miss paper versions

If the e-magazine saved money on production costs, I imagine that any savings the reader might accrue as a result are completely obliterated by the price of a laptop on which to read them. Also, I second the notion that laptops and small children do not mix. Too many close calls...

    Weakness by Edition

I find that I am quite glad that I am unable to see the post you're responding to, but somewhat annoyed that everyone keeps quoting bits of it, so that I am reminded why I am glad that I can't see it.

The New 4th Edition God-Killing Rules

Then ignore the stats. Some people want them, and it's easier to say "gods can't be killed with swords in my campaign" than it is to create deity stats off the cuff. This is about as much of a problem as the lack of the Great Wheel in the DMG is a problem. Solution: minor edits.

The New 4th Edition God-Killing Rules

Man, I haven't killed a god since 1st edition. This is a part of the game that we seriously needed to return to. 3rd edition Deities and Demigods was a mess of useless and gigantic statblocks, but I can see a 4th edition Deities & Demigods reading like a menu of epic murder.

    Weakness by Edition

Things I haven't seen mentioned yet: 1e: Most characters of the same class are identical. Fighters are fighters, especially after they get their first set of Gauntlets of Ogre Power and are looking for their first Belt of Giant Strength (hill). Thieves are thieves, wizards all have the same...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

1st edition/2nd edition PC: Don't give me any lip, 0 level NPC. You don't even have hit dice, and I've got a name level! 3rd edition PC: Don't give me any lip, NPC. What do you have, Expert levels? I am a PC, and I have class abilities, good hit dice, higher wealth by level, and probably...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Again, the poster was presenting his opinions as fact, and acting in a dismissive way toward the possibility that they are not, in fact, fact. And I continue to maintain that sophistry concerning the nature of truth has rather nothing to do with the issue...the issue being debate etiquette.

Why is WotC trying to kill my FLGS?

Or you could interpret the MSRP as being wholly irrelevant. Amazon sells for what they can afford to. Brick-and-mortar stores sell for what they can afford to. The MSRP has really nothing to do with anything, because what really sets the price is the cost of the book to the vendor and the...

Schroedinger's Wounding (Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e)

Given that this is an extremely obtuse block of text, and does not seem to relate directly to Hypersmurf's rather clear question on the subject, I think that this stock response of yours--that you already answered the question--is perhaps ill-advised. If you're not interested in replying to...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

And yet, the problem here is that someone has come on the forum and basically made the "4e is too anime/videogame/superhero/whatever" argument (which I believe has Godwinned the thread, per Remathilis's criteria), and when challenged on this point, responded with something akin to "don't blame...

That's one kind of DRM. Disallowing copies to be made by creating some kind of mandatory barrier is a more general example of DRM.
