4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Aren't you then arguing that truth is simply opinion? That's not something that most people want to agree with. To be truth, it must square with something objective, or at least transcendental. "A true belief" differs from "a belief" by its reference to some actual state of affairs, usually...

Well, that settles that. Good job figuring that out, however you did it.

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

I was using Tank to refer to my 1e fighter long before they even invented MMORPGs, so perhaps the direction of causality is running in the other direction. I don't suppose it's unlikely that D&D has itself influenced the language of gaming in general, being the original avatar-based combat game.

Are you making the claim that it was edited? Do you have any evidence? A forum post from the time at which the article was edited showing the different versions would be fine. A cached google page would be fine. Nothing disappears on the internet anymore. If you want to make a claim...

Why is WotC trying to kill my FLGS?

Seriously. Some of us don't have the luxury of blowing our money on pizza and beer. Some of us have to budget our money responsibly, and gaming stuff comes at the expense of important things. Every gaming book I buy is another $30 + compounded interest that doesn't go into my RESPs.

Schroedinger's Wounding (Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e)

Heck, put healing surges on a condition track, using the Endurance skill. Tougher characters will heal faster, and it'll take days to recover from a tough day of getting beat up.

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

I notice that you cut out my comments about granularity, which were largely the point of that post, so I'll repeat myself. If the DM does not say, "the enemy glances at the paladin, giving you an opening," you don't get a chance to use an interesting ability that relies on such an opening...

    Forked Thread: The Great Wheel

While wandering about looking for sparrows this summer, having read some Moorcock shortly beforehand, I came up with the following brief sketch of a cosmology/pantheon based on the feywild/shadowfell idea: The feywild and the shadowfell were once the only realities, themselves both sentient...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

See, I agree with the statement, and I think it's a valid criticism. I just don't think it's a very compelling criticism. The reason that they bumped the half-orcs and added eladrin is IMO a bit spurious, but given that half-orcs will eventually be added (circa March, apparently), it's kind of...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Don't you talk trash about Lamarr! 4e solved a lot of my problems with 3e, which for the most part focused around ease of use, especially at high level. There are many legitimate problems with both editions, and I consider myself to be a fairly impartial commentator, given my edition...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to come in here and show us how some idiosyncrasy of the 4e rules is actually so contrary to the enjoyment of the game that those of us who play it are actually making you enjoy your life less by continuing to play. But don't sweat it. I'm sure that...

Schroedinger's Wounding (Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e)

That's what they call them in Iron Heroes, and that's a game that embraces the "mighty thews" genre of S&S fantasy. IH stole it from 3e Unearthed Arcana, who got it from Omega World, where it was a way to account for the lack of magic healing in the setting. Reserves are the "oh, I've been...

Why is WotC trying to kill my FLGS?

Amazon has been reaping a swath of destruction through bookstores since its inception. WotC has no ability to set the price that Amazon sells their books for. If your FLGS can't compete, it's just capitalism. Amazon figured out how to undercut the distribution and retail system, and so most...

    DDI subscription: still full pdfs?

I'm mostly interested in getting old adventures, not so much old rules articles.

Schroedinger's Wounding (Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e)

Totally. My sense of wonder is destroyed unless I require seventeen weeks of bed rest attended by a character with the correct combination of skills in order to recover from a mace injury to the left clavicle.

    DDI subscription: still full pdfs?

I've downloaded all the issues of Dungeon (and Dragon) and I'm thinking of eventually signing up for a DDI subscription, once they get their other features up and running (I ain't gonna pay for no betas). However, it's not clear whether they're still publishing the issues as full PDFs, which is...

Schroedinger's Wounding (Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e)

As I pointed out in the original thread, if you set out to deliberately contrive a situation in which the rules appear to be silly, you'll probably succeed.

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Except that these aren't house rules. The approach we're describing toward the narration of in-game events is the intended approach. It's not a workaround for a problem, it's the actual way they expected us to do it. You have a power that describes a mechanical effect, and it has some fluff...

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Hong, or someone like him, then. It's a good point anyway. As soon as you allow magical unicorns and physics-defying giant humanoids into a game, you can either start writing Nitpickers' Guides or you can just play the damn game.
