Pathfinder 1E is a big Pathfinder surge on the way?

Before WotC's official announcement of 5E, there was still momentum of people going over from 4E to Pathfinder. People haven't made up their mind, and they're still going over. It's a pretty slow process, slower than I would have thought. But think about this: it takes WotC 1-2 years to...

Yer candidate for the monster on 5th MM1

How about this: a gelatinous cube that takes up the entire cover, and it's a transparent cover, so you can see the endpages with other monsters and bits of armor, bones, and treasure inside.

Is the D&D brand name really that important?

Me too. I guess it should not be surprising that the people who end up working at WotC are people who talk that way about D&D. Suck-ups.

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

I think it was a conscious choice by WotC. They have said about their current philosophy that "you [the players] are the story". Right or wrong, they're trusting us to figure out how to spin the rules into a fun adventure.

It would be interesting if they literally called them out by Edition Number. Fighter 1, Fighter 2, Fighter 3.5, Fighter 4.

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

Maybe that's the sort of thing they'll ask all of us, the community. Should sneak attack affect undead? Yes No That still seems to be a contradiction. On one hand, D&D is whatever game the individual wants to play. On the other hand, we're taking a vote on how we are all going to play...

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

I'd agree with you except that Monte just said "This is not another salvo in the so-called edition wars." If it's a new edition, that pretty much equates to a new salvo in the edition wars. Or, WotC is just saying two different things, and we'll just have to wait and see which one is the lie...

    To Hell with Dungeons & Dragons ! ! !

Herman Cain plays Pokemon, and I'm pretty sure he's cool.

So let's see. A 3rd edition rogue and a 4th edition rogue in the same party. The 4e rogue has 24 hit points. The 3e rogue has 9 hit points. The 4e rogue can sneak attack undead. The 3e rogue cannot. I think I know which rogue I will pick.

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

Well, conversion is not the issue. It's just whether they can affect each other with their abilities. And whether they can both kill the same monsters. But also, Cook and Mearls aren't saying they're going to directly convert 1e, 2e, 3e, and 4e. They're saying it will sort of feel a bit like...

What in the world is left to be in core?

I guess I missed a step. I meant every player only has access to a single class. As in, the fighter has the fighter book. The cleric has the cleric book. The wizard has the wizard book. Meanwhile, the DM has to collect them all if he's going to keep up, buying one class at a time. Meh. It's...

What in the world is left to be in core?

Hmm, I sense you're exaggerating for effect, but I'm going to take the bait. As a DM, that would not work for me at all. I have done the thing where the player brings me one of his books that I don't own and asks me if he can play this class. I said yes, and then I had to deal with never...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wow, 5e sure needs to have an OGL/attractive GSL

Well Pathfinder is already done. But if you're asking whether Paizo could do it all again with 5E, I'd say it's not possible to make a sufficiently open license yet not have it allow repackaging of the basic rules. I don't think that sort of repackaging was ever a problem for WotC until they...

Is the D&D brand name really that important?

There's brand recognition, and then there's brand loyalty. Brand recognition is why WotC was able to stagger along through 4E. Brand recognition is on the top of people's heads. Brand recognition is people being able to say "oh, yes, that game with the wizards and the battlemats, what's it...

Is the D&D brand name really that important?

I've seen several commentators on blogs say that one of the things that makes D&D so great is the brand name. It's because anything with a different name isn't, in our heart of hearts, "real D&D". Their point seems to be that WotC screwed up so bad with 4E that they drove away those emotional...

Cast Raise Dead on a Game Element!

The thing I liked about crit confirmation was that it ratcheted up the action. It raised the stakes. That's a fun thing to do in a game. It's true though, that rolling a 20 could end up being a rather deflating experience when you don't confirm. Maybe there could be a compromise. If you roll...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wow, 5e sure needs to have an OGL/attractive GSL

Because it is impossible for WotC to make a game for everyone. It's more than one company can do. It's more than one sane company should attempt. If I was a Hasbro shareholder, I'd be very upset with WotC if they tried to do it all themselves. They'd be taking stupid risks with tiny niche...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wow, 5e sure needs to have an OGL/attractive GSL

I agree. And I think they should commit to it now. Or as soon as possible. The sooner they commit to an Open Gaming License for 5E, the sooner other game companies will jump on it and really increase the hype for 5E. People, including some speaking from within WotC, keep on saying "well, let's...

Cast Raise Dead on a Game Element!

I cast Raise Dead on: Critical Hits seriously, 4E's idea of a critical hit is a joke. "You mean I get to do as much damage as I might have done anyways (1 in 6 chance on a d6*), and, count my lucky stars, I don't even have to roll my sparkly die that I expressly bought to roll damage on...

    D&D 5E (2014) D20 or 2D10 should 5e go to Gauss ?

This has always been the thing that's most fun at early levels. Later levels can be kind of predictable. I think you're approaching the design backwards. If the designers want to make a bonus more meaningful, all they have to do is increase it. If they wanted to do this, they would have done...
