PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

I fail to see how just the core rulebooks is a high investment, at least in comparison to other hobbies. I have many hobbies, and the cheapest by far is board games. I invest in the board game once and it's done. Fantasy Flight Games have a significantly higher sticker price, but they also...

Are stat modifiers really bonus + 1/2 per level?

Ability checks are any of the following: Strength Check (for example trying to force a door open [in 3e]) Dexterity Check (For example resisting being tripped) Constitution Check (For example Holding your breath Intelligence Check (For example making an untrained knowledge check (which had a...

    WotC_Shoe on leaderless parties

Very well could be... ...If humans still have a bonus feat. But obviously with feats being more common in 4e, it may not be as powerful to get a bonus feat. As such, I'm open to the idea that humans may, in fact, not get a bonus feat. We'll just have to see.

Are stat modifiers really bonus + 1/2 per level?

I've come to hypothesize that healing surges are a resource, not a value based on the very information contained within this post in said thread. In fact, I was going to post that exact same quote with the same emphasis until I noticed I was beaten to the punch.

Healing Surges: 6 + Constitution modifier

I was thinking exactly that. The biggest insight into it is that it's a resource. Per day? Don't know yet, but it seems like it's a consumable resource of some kind. Even if it isn't and it's the actual number of healing, it'd be very easy for it to scale. For example at higher levels, you...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

I'm holding out until I see more of the rules on this for the following reason: Category: Pick. Leather and daggers may be a category, which means if you introduce a new weapon, you just need to give it the category of dagger and rogues are automatically proficient with it.

    Ampersand Sneak Attack: Alignments

I just think it's: Unaligned is an option. You haven't devoted or stuck yourself in any extreme. Or you can do any of the classic alignments if you see your character/monster filling those shoes: Lawful Good Neutral Good Chaotic Good Lawful Neutral True Neutral Chaotic Neutral Lawful Evil...

Are stat modifiers really bonus + 1/2 per level?

From what I've seen, I've come to the speculation of: Ability score = obviously the stat. Ability modifier = (stat - 10)/2 Skill modifier for untrained skills = ability modifier + 1/2 level Skill modifier for trained skills = ability modifier + 1/2 level + 5 Are people really thinking it's...

    WotC_Shoe on leaderless parties

Seems in line with my prediction that you get one at first level and every even level.

D&D 4E So, which class will end up being the -Zilla of 4e?

I don't see how the ability that lets you keep str to damage on a miss is any different than a spell that you fail to hit for full with (3e equivalent of someone saving for half damage). Although, I do agree that 4e fighters look dangerous.

D&D 4E So, which class will end up being the -Zilla of 4e?

Actually, I can see that being the closest to true. Bringing the fighter up, along with HP up, along with giving them the ability to do good damage (supposedly enough to make you choose it if you want to do damage and be in close range with enemies, as opposed to jumping in and out like rogues...

So, what Class are you dying to play?

While I'm interested in reading and playing all of them, the two classes that interest me the most are two of the iconic D&D classes: The Fighter and Wizard. The fighter being revamped to be a very nice competent choice with real specializations in weapons (different abilities for different...

    Why WILL you switch?

Given a lot of the design concepts behind 4e, I think the mechanics will create a much more balanced and enjoyable combat. In addition the DM tools for monsters, the condensed monster stat block and encounter design, along with faster NPC creation, and even on the fly formulas for NPCs all lead...

D&D 4E Is my friend's unwillingness to try 4e irrational?

You know, this is very very similar to a post I made, say.. 4-5 years ago on a different subject. Someone said (paraphrased) "Well, she has the right to be irrational and childish about it. It's her life." I thought "Obviously. I wasn't ever questioning the person's right to choose, but...

    The Reduction of Uncertainty

I can see the same statement and come to a different conclusion. Uncertainty is not bad. We have dice to determine things that are uncertain, and rarely do I hear people who complain about getting to roll dice in D&D. Too much uncertainty, or rather uncertainty with dire consequences as it's...

    Static vs. Tailored Encounters

Yes, every sandbox DM is automatically assuming. It is entirely possible for a sandbox DM to have a story as well. Strange but true.

    Static vs. Tailored Encounters

I use what I like to think of as Tailored Static encounters. The world exists at least from the point of immersion. I want the world to actually feel like it revolves. It doesn't need to, but the illusion has to be there. As the players are the focus of the story, if they do stumble across...

Core Rulebook Gift Set Discounted on Amazon!

I wish I were closer to Games Plus... I'd like to check it out. I live in Naperville, and the closest D&D selling gaming store (I.E. not a book store like Barnes and Noble or Borders) was the Gamer's Paradise in the Fox Valley Mall. They had horrible service, stuck up and rude, and pretty much...

    D&D 3.x I love 3E. I love 4E. I'm mad!

Oddly enough, that's exactly why I take a reasonable position. *gets booted off the internet for blasphemy*

    D&D 4E I want 4E NOW!

Well, more like 4. 4 months, 2 hours, central standard time until midnight June 6th. Although, I've preordered my books from amazon.com with super saver shipping, so I won't be receiving my books until the 10th, but being as I had a $50 borders gift card, it's only around 16 dollars for all 3...
