Geography and statistical probability of ENWorld members

That animation in your signature makes my browser slow way down and scroll choppily. I'm not sure if anyone else is feeling that effect.

My Next Helper Program (updated 7-16-2003)

Yeah, that's what I was picturing. Maybe you could support straight point buy (1 point = +1 to ability), graduated point buy (1 point can get you +1 up to 14, 14-16 cost 2 points each, etc), or something like that. Dunno, just a thought to get the ball rolling.

How about doing something with the point buy system?

EB Games - good deals in-store

At my local EB Games, they seem to be liquidating their stock of D&D/D20 books. I'm not sure if this is nation wide/world wide, but there were some good deals at mine. I picked up Call of Cthulu for $22.99. They also had Tome and Blood, The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, and the Book of...

    PDA? Which to buy?

If you are a linux fan, check out the Sharp Zaurus. Any of the models, really. It runs linux, so you can put all kinds of interesting stuff on it. It runs java really well, so PCGen might even work.

Have you ever played with a 'standard' party?

My last group had a barbarian, two wizards, a rogue, and a ranger. The one before that had a fighter, rogue, ranger, and bard. Nobody in my groups seem to like clerics, for some reason.

The DM's Laptop: what should be on it?

Another good thing might be a dice rolling program for making truly secret/silent rolls. A collection of generic dungeon maps, or something that makes random dungeons could be useful too.

The DM's Laptop: what should be on it?

In addition to the other great programs mentioned here, I'd like to recommend JH NameGen Gold, and that's not just because I made it. The fact is, I always used to have an issue coming up with decent names on the spot. JH NameGen Gold will generate names for people, towns, taverns, spells...

Point-buy or rolling? Your preference and why?

I'm the one who said "cookie-cutter". And I HAVE tried point buy. In all the games I have tried it in, the parties have ended up basically the same. Big strong boring fighter with low charisma, super smart wizard-type with low charisma, exceptionally wise cleric, etc. In the games I've tried...

Point-buy or rolling? Your preference and why?

Definitely rolling. I like the luck aspect, plus it helps avoid making cookie-cutter characters.

    penalty for cheating

Use it as a roleplaying opportunity. His character obviously made a deal with some dark powers in order to grant him success. Use that. I think it's time for the dark power to come looking for his character. They don't just give you powers like that without expecting something in return...

How (un)helpful are rules for you ?

We wing it a lot. It allows for a very fluid gaming style, with few interruptions and some very cinematic/heroic scenes. We manage to be fair and reasonably consistent, so nobody in the group cares whether it was "really" supposed to be 4d6 or 3d8.
