The Elegance of d20 and D&D

But elegant == simple. It's a necessary, not a sufficient condition. For example, you can't get much simpler than hit points, but I wouldn't say they're elegant.

The Elegance of d20 and D&D

Here's an applicable definition of elegant: Applying this to rules design makes perfect sense to me, since you hear physicists and mathematicians using it all the time in this way. I don't think d20 is entirely elegant, but I think plenty of d20-based systems in OGL games are.

Does Eberron fandom correllate to experience with other non-D&D RPGs?

I'm an "Eberron hatah" because I'm not conservative and traditional in my roleplaying tastes, and I find Eberron to be rather conservative and traditional. Being of the "substantial experience with non-D&D RPGs" group, that seems to put me totally opposite your hypothesis.

[Rant] Fantasy - beyond the "standard" paradigm

Why? Do you find it offensive to be accused of playing something that isn't fantasy? Don't get me wrong, I agree with your point--I'm just not sure why you care. It's sort of like Eberron being called "corny" in the other thread. People are defending it from being "corny" by calling it "pulp,"...

    Fantasy becoming too fantastic...?

This is pretty much what I was going to say. The "problem," if there is one, is more with how D&D mechanics represent things as dire-fiendish-half-dragon-githyanki, which is sort of the same as going around describing yourself as a dire-Irish-half-Italian-Korean (or whatever you happen to be) in...

    Jet Li - Fearless

It wasn't bad, but wasn't amazing either. Some of the same things that annoyed me in Hero annoyed me in Fearless. The only thing that really held my attention was that Fearless is almost like a prequel to Fist of Legend, a much better movie.

    Pronouns

I don't find it creepy at all. I'm sure some people have difficulty distinguishing themselves from their characters, but I doubt that applies to any of us. The whole movement to strictly differentiate players from characters in every detail of game text, in fact, strikes me as being far sillier...

    Pronouns

I believe there's an exception to the prohibition against they/them/their in the singular after 'each,' 'n/either,' 'every' and so on. If you fleshed the sentence out, it would be "each [of them] had," for example. There's no option for my vote, which is to use the second person, not the...

Why are D&D discussions so angry?

They're smart not to go overboard with bans. Anyone with a clue can make a new account, change their IP, in general take whatever measures are necessary to regain access to the forums. If that person is vindictive, there's really no way for anyone to stop him or her from attacking the site. The...

Just saw X-Men III (Now with spoilers!)

It makes perfect sense in that context. Not if you have time and money to read the comics. I haven't seen them since I was 9, though, which was about 16 years ago. You can imagine how I'd be fuzzy on the details. Yet not so fuzzy as to forget that the Phoenix Force was a bit of a retcon (making...

Just saw X-Men III (Now with spoilers!)

By "original" I'm referring to the original Dark/Phoenix Saga. She was given the name Phoenix despite the fact that, originally, she was supposed to survive the ordeal, and after that, even when her death had been written, her resurrection was never planned (Claremont vocally opposed it). In...

Just saw X-Men III (Now with spoilers!)

I have no idea why the original writers chose Phoenix (since originally there was no Phoenix Force, IIRC, and originally Jean was supposed to live, and even once it was decided she would die, originally she wasn't supposed to be resurrected); but 'phoinix' is Greek for a deep red, crimson sort...

Rate X-Men: The Last Stand [no spoilers]

It was rushed to make the Memorial Day Weekend release date, yeah. Considering the tight schedule Ratner was on taking over after the two previous directors dropped out, X3 came out pretty friggin solid. I gave it an 8, but if they cut enough material from the theater release to make a more...

Just saw X-Men III (Now with spoilers!)

Wolverine kills 10 soldiers--that's regular humans, not mutants--in minutes 35-39 of the movie. The last 2 look like they might not have received fatal wounds, but the rest are all pretty obviously gone. They would've been joined by a lot more, too, if Stryker hadn't shown up.

Just saw X-Men III (Now with spoilers!)

Dude, you keep saying this, which leads me to believe you've never actually seen X2. If you're going from memory, don't. Watch all 3 movies together. You'll find the disconnect you're trying to prove here isn't nearly as pronounced as you'd like it to be. What about the inconsistencies in your...

My thoughts exactly. I wasn't planning on seeing this, but you've sold me on it.

    Pronouncing Acheron: ASH, or ACK?

The Greek pronunciation is actually a sound that English doesn't have, so it's been simplified to ACK. An equivalent would be that back-of-the-throat hocking-a-loogie sound English-speakers tend to associate with German, minus the hyperbole of course.

    What is "The Forge?"

Oddly enough, I thought there was more a concensus about the unlikelihood of strong AI in analytic philosophy than anywhere else. So on that count I think eyebeams is misrepresenting your discipline as much as you're misrepresenting his with some of your comments. But maybe I've just been...
