D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

Huh? What is that 22 minute thing? Do you want a long rest after every session? That seems like a strange requirement. And easy combats are encounters. When you have 6-8 encounters between long rests, even easy encounters can have impact. I'm used to having many sessions between long rests...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

I mean, almost every action movie has a half-dozen encounters in it. And not every action movie is "engaged in slaughtering a village or similar". The only trick then is to avoid a long rest in the middle of the action movie plot. Which is hard under the default "any night's rest will do" rules.

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

Can Indy defeat 50 soldiers? Depending on assumptions, 50 typical soldiers could be a reasonable strait up fight, an environmental hazard, a guaranteed tpk, or somethibg that requires careful tactics and planning to deal with. If the players are picking how they interact with the world, and...

D&D 5E (2014) If I were to publish a megadungeon, how would you prefer I handle XP?

Oh I know this one! You solve the hobgoblin/kobold dispute, bringing peace, then you wipe out the kobolds. The trick is to complete the hobgoblin peace quest without claiming reward, then wipe the kobolds, then claim both rewards with both dialog boxes open.

    D&D 5E (2024) Dexterity too good?

Brawn: (All of str+con, except only adds to HP on EVEN levels) Dexterity: (As-is) Intelligence: (As-is) Wisdom: (As-is) Charisma: (As-is) Fate: (Adds to HP on ODD levels, Death saves, Prof times/LR can replace a failed d20 test with a Fate test of the same kind) HP: L0 gives a d8 (or d6 if...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

This assumes that PC power growth via XP and adventuring is normal in your world. It ain't in mine. Because it seems silly to me.

    D&D 5E (2024) Dexterity too good?

It isn't that Dex is too good. It is that Strength is no better than int/wis/cha. Con: needed by everyone for HP Dex: needed by everyone for AC/Initiative Other stats: Adds to skills, your combat abilities if that is your stat of choice, saves. Next, Con/Dex/Wis get "bigger" saves, Wis gets...

D&D 5E (2014) If I were to publish a megadungeon, how would you prefer I handle XP?

Did you have to waste the gp to get the XP? Like, spend it carousing or building a castle or donating to a church?

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

My issue with this is that it changes what level 7 means to the PCs. Is level 7 "you are a competent warrior", or is it "you are the best swordsman in the empire"? So when you face pirates, are they competent warriors or are they strangely better than the best swordsmen in the empire? This...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

You'll note that if you take the view that NPCs can't refresh their abilities (etc) as fast as PCs can, published adventure stats still work for a single combat's worth of resources. Like, imagine if the Bishop was a 12th level cleric, but their abilities are their yearly spells (or, monthly)...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

In the setting I am working on, magic doesn't work like PC magic does. Wizards, for the most part, are people with books of scrolls. They can create scrolls. And, with effort and a few times per day, they can cast spells from scrolls. So each use of magic requires capital expenses (creating a...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

Sure, but that isn't Power Word: Kill. Power Word: Kill is saying a word and someone drops dead.

D&D 5E (2014) Assassin Variant: Poisoner, not Infiltrator

I like the idea of stealing from the Alchemist. If I may? Rogue Subclass: Chemist POISONER You gain proficiency with Poisoner's Kit. If you already have proficiency with the Poisoner's Kit, instead gain proficiency with another tool of your choice. When you make a proficiency check with a...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

Power Word Kill Action: Bonus Action Target: 1 creature Duration: Instantaneous If the target has fewer than 100 HP they are killed. If the target has more than 100 HP, roll 1d20 and reduce both the caster's and target's current and maximum HP by ten times this value. If this lowers your...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

Except 5e doesn't try to mimic 1e's power curve. Anyhow here is the original spells: https://dungeonsdragons.fandom.com/wiki/Power_word In OD&D fighting men had 1d6+1 HP per level. http://grognardia.blogspot.com/2020/11/hit-points-od-vs-greyhawk.html Those are HP from Greyhawk and earlier...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

I personally would be all for turning every Power Word into a "Gather" and "Utter" effect. Power Word Stun 8 Enchantment Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Target: One creature you can see within range Components: V Duration: 1 minute Classes: Bard, Sorcerer...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

How about: Power Word Kill Bonus Action Duration 1 minute Range: 60 feet Target: Self For the next minute you are aware which creatures you can detect that have fewer than 100 HP within range. As part of casting this spell, or as a bonus action, you can kill a single creature of your choice...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

Sure Except you can still do that without it being slotless. It takes 4 attacks on average to trigger 1 opportunity to cast shield. Capping at 1/round. And wizards who are attacked that often are dead? Unless they are AC optimizing +5 AC won't make them beefy. Wizards who are not getting...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

    1. Unless unable to use reactions 2. Unless counterspell 3. Unless shield rebalanced, so it isn't +5 AC in all situations 4. Unless other reactions are more important Using shield is often a bad plan, because level 1 slots are so cheap already. It takes an average of 4 attack attempts for...
