    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

Yeah, actually, it is. I think anyone who puts their opinions on a pedestal and degrades those of others simply because they're different is being an ignorant jerk, because they're operating from the position that there isn't another way of doing things. Mod Note: Two wrongs don't make a...

    Hobbits are Back!

That's an interesting point and is probably one of the few examples where a skill bonus would legitimately make sense as a biological factor of race, rather than a cultural one.

Starting the iteration at DDXP: Reimagining Skills and Abilities

It's also not all that dissimilar (from what I understand) from 2e's proficiency system, which was entirely optional but allowed your character to have specialized skills that made him adept at a particular task. I never played 2e, though, so I don't know quite how that would work in practice.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

That depends on the assassin, though, doesn't it? Personally, I'd be fine - if they bring back alignment (please?) - with making assassins a nongood-exclusive class. I definitely agree that killing for money is not a particularly virtuous career choice and indeed, straddles along the dark of...

As much, not more. I don't see what's difficult about that to understand.

No, their mistake with 4e was believing that to appeal to new players they had to get rid of what old players liked. That's entirely different than what I'm saying. I believe you can have your cake and eat it. There's no reason you can't have dwarves and tieflings, wizards and warlords in the...

What doesn't belong in the "core"

Really, this is no different than 2e players who disliked dwarven mages or elven paladins. It's just as easy/hard to say no to dragonborn as it was to say no to those things. 2e players who couldn't handle it stayed with 2e. Those who could moved on.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

They don't know for sure how many, but they do know that it's enough that it's worth supporting. WotC's playing it much more cautiously this time.

D&D 4E 5E as a Rewritten 4E with Flavor Bits from Other Editions?

Yeah, it's sounding a bit more like a mix of 2e and 3e with 4e sprinkled on the top to me. I mean powers appear to be out and Vancian is back in - that's one of the biggest contentions of the 3e vs. 4e wars.

This is a mistake to me. WotC needs to appeal to new players as much as it needs to appeal to old players. That's a difficult proposition but it's necessary if D&D's going to continue to be relevant.

    Hobbits are Back!

On that note, I rather liked the redesign of elves in DA2. Yeah, I know some people thought it was too big of a change, but I much prefer that elves look more distinct than most human ethnicities do.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

I'd probably opt personally for fewer classes, but D&D couldn't get away with that without pissing off a lot of people, so I'm okay with a dozen or so. I do think the game should have fewer classes than 4e ended up having by the end of PHB3, though (and Essentials if you count the builds therein...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

FWIW, I never actually said "realistic." It's verisimilitude, as I see it, rather than realism. Obviously priests IRL don't actually go around casting "cure minor wounds" on people. But I think that magic works best if it feels granular and meaningful. It's the same reason I'm not overly fond of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

As stated above, I like healing surges well enough but there is a fundamental clash between hit points' stated RAW meaning and their implied meaning via game effects and their derivation from Constitution. According to the rules, HP mean plot damage. But the fact that recovering them is called...

What kind of New Setting for Fifth Edition? (Other than old settings)

I'd actually kind of like to see what Rich Burlew cooked up. My curiosity burns furiously knowing we won't ever know otherwise.

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

The central problem here is that D&D was the first major roleplaying game of any kind and the first fantasy roleplaying game in particular. That puts it in an awkward position. It's expected to be the leader of the industry and to maintain that leadership it has to move with the times. On the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I'm not super attached to healing surges but I do like two things about them. They allow characters to heal on their own. They put a hard cap on healing. These two things only make common sense to me. Of course, someone's going to heal on their own from wounds they sustain. It might take...

    Psionics

I've never used psionics but they've been there from the beginning so I see no reason to begrudge them or players who want them. As for the sci-fi vs. fantasy argument? Personally, I always like a little fantasy in my science fiction and a little science fiction in my fantasy. When it comes...

My number #1 wish: No More Magic Marts!

They've already pretty much flat-out stated that magic items will be a lot rarer and significant than they are in previous editions, so I think your desire will be fulfilled at least to some extent.

Sorcerer: the only class I'm worried about (and how I'd make it)

Mmm. Perhaps. I've certainly encountered warlocks in D&D who have a strong personality (Ammon Jerro from Neverwinter Nights 2 is one example). However, I don't think that's a requirement of the Faustian archetype endemic to the warlock class. Still, I'll agree that warlocks and sorcerers -...
