D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

But having a TPK based on an abstract social roleplay mechanic will not make the core D&D play very happy. At the very least you would end the encounter with the King calling the guards and then ask the players how they want to react. If it means a fight to a TPK then fine, but I as a player...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

I disagree. It makes no sense that randomly rolling a skill can yeild better results than a take 20. Perhaps there could be a 1 in a million chance that a person just winging it will do better than if they took their time, but 1 in 20 I don't think so. Combat is chaotic, there is always a...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

While it is true, and the spirit of D&D relies on the ability of the DM to wing it, such a blanket statement implies that checkers is a better roleplaying game than D&D because it has absolutly no player character rules thus nothing is forbidden. I think it is wrong to compare homebrew 3E to...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

I listened to the Tome podcast today and the host interveiwed Andy Collins. This skill check mechanism came up and he gave some more details. First was that the players did not choose the difficulty level directly. The players come up with solutions, the DM determins if the proper use of...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

I don’t see how the paladin example has anything to do with G/S but rather G/N. I think they have already established that there will be Good and Evil Paladin just like good and evil angels. And even if they did not paladins can be played quite differently from each other. I had one player...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Revinor, thanks for the lengthly description. I can see how that could be fun. I'm not sure if it is for me, but it sounds pretty cool. I appreciate the time you took to explain the game. JesterOC

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

I fail to understand how Narrative play as described in this thread could approach anything that I would call fun. To me it seems like it is two or more people talking about a movie and then one guy says "Hey wouldn't it have been cool if the dude was trying to save a princess instead. And the...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Yep, me too sign me up. If I had 5k sitting around I would even buy in to get it early. I have thought about it, but Damn 5k!

    Opportunity and interrupt confusion

Only if you read into it too much. The interupt does not reverse time, the triggering event does not get removed, however after the interupt is over there is a chance that the situation has changed to a point where the original triggering event is no longer valid (like the creature died). Opportunity and interrupt confusion

But it does interupt it, not only that it is possible for the action that triggered to interupt to be completely stoped. The action that can be lost is the action that triggered the interupt, not the immediate action as the immediate action acts first (unlike the reaction that allows the...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

It does not prevent movement, the dragon can move if it wants to. It prevents a special type of movement. A shift allows the target to move and not provoke an attack of operatunity. It can't shift but it can move. If the DM decides not to move the target that is a tactical descision. You...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

So just to be clear. The pinned target can not shift, but it can move right? It has been a while since I have played 3E, if two allies are next to a pinned monster, and it decides to move, do both allies get an AoO on it? If so that sounds pretty good. You may miss on the knockout punch but...

D&D 4E What will 4e do to make it easier to game?

How 4E will help me... My players often rely on me to make their characters, so the PC maker software is a help. Monster stats all in one place is a huge help. Those are the main two. JesterOC

    D&D 4E 4e Monster List - Dwarven Nosepicker & Elven Butt Scratcher

The word filler suggests that that are not interesting. I would suggest another term. 1) A MM with 150 unique creatures and 350 specializations of those creatures 2) A MM with 500 unique creatures? I would definatly take 1. The days of a different mosnter in every room are long gone...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster List - Dwarven Nosepicker & Elven Butt Scratcher

The problm with that method is you need to flip back and forth between the chart and the base stats and do a merge in your head at game time, or write them all out as individual stats before the game. I like 4E method much better. Just give me one stat block per monster, so I can photo copy it...

    DDXP characters - unexpected tactics?

They did playtest and they did find and fix it. I hear many people say this, as if they had been playing with this rule for 10 months and only found it now. More likely it was a change that was put in right before they made the character sheets, and before they found out it was too late.

    D&D 4E 4e Healing - Is This Right?

By the way Jeff, after reading this whole thread even though I don't mind 4E's system, in fact I think it just reduces the more boring aspects of D&D i.e. the let’s wait until we are healed parts. I respect the way you have calmly held firm to your convictions without hitting below the belt...

Low Damage, High HP ... How is this "Faster"?

Well if you don't like Magic Missile, then use a crossbow, at least you have a choice. And come on! At-will Mage hand, Light, and Ghost Sound just does won't get boring! I loved Dizlag's post about a player using Mage Hand to hold a sunrod perpetually. That is just cool stuff. I’ll take that...
