I've been told (in this thread) that American "steak fries" are pretty close to the chips served at many of the UK's "fish & chips" shops. So maybe it's cultural influence.

Oh I agree completely, but I know (and married) folks who would insist otherwise. I'm all about the Crinkle-cut myself, and purely because of childhood nostalgia. But that's okay, nostalgia is delicious.

Same here...I feel like they're more oily than regular fries. I prefer the regular ol' crinkle-cut fries, but it's probably not a popular choice these days. Hmm...let's find out. I just made a poll about fried potatoes...
