Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

Looks like about a third of us use random encounters fairly regularly, or have some kind of mechanism in place to avoid using scripted encounters. That's fewer than I had imagined; I figured it would be about half of us. This poll was born from a different thread, where people were discussing...

Tariffs: 'De Minimis' Exemption Ended, Affects Individual Game Orders Entering US

Like I said elsewhere: If a product now costs $80 to manufacture in China and ship to the United States, it will soon cost $79.99 to be manufactured here in the United States.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I guess that's a good thing? It sounds like a good thing.

D&D General WotC: 'Of Course We're Going To Do' Baldur's Gate 4

That is one possible issue, yes. Another might be the same three people on EN World are assuming it will be a failure because of the name of the producer. Or have already decided to hate it sight-unseen, purely because of the name of the producer. EDIT: my post was quoted before and after I...

Probably, but getting my group to use Foundry is a challenge in and of itself.

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

Awesome, @Reynard. I was hoping to hear from some non-D&D gamers on this poll.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

This is certainly true for me. I own tons of games, but I only get to play the ones with VTT support. Sometimes I can fake indie game support with a generic VTT like Owlbear Rodeo, but non-D&D games are already a hard sell for my gaming group... lack of Roll20 functionality doesn't help.

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

That wasn't my intent. I believe that random encounter lists can (and maybe should) be carefully curated and balanced by the DM to match the party and the setting. As much as balance can be, anyway.

I mean, I get that. I'm just trying to imagine what that looks like at the table.

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

@Cadence @BigJackBrass I'm bummed that I messed that option up, because it was the one I was most interested in hearing feedback from. We hear a lot of banter about "scripted vs. random," but not much else. If neither Scripted nor Random, what do you use instead?

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

For my part, I voted "Mostly." I'm a big fan of @SlyFlourish 's techniques and random generation tables in The Lazy DM series of books. Due to work, life, and home constraints, I don't have the time to fully script out every combat scene...I prefer to work with a story outline, a handful of...

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

I was reading a thread about narrative choices in tabletop games, and it made me curious about a particular type of narrative choice: the random encounter. Do you use them in your game? Are you comfortable letting the dice decide the party's conflicts and challenges for the day? Do you scipt...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it either. About the only thing I could say to that player would be "then you're going to be very frustrated at my table" and let it sort itself out. With a fundamental disconnect like that, it's probably best if the player left the group to find a more...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Imagine telling your DM "No thanks. I'm here to react to the world, not to help create it." That doesn't sound like my kind of game.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Hm. I've run a dozen different gaming groups for nearly 30 years, and I've never met a player who didn't enjoy contributing to the narrative when prompted. (I refuse to adopt Alexanderian's vernacular for this phenomenon. Stop trying to make Fetch happen, it's never gonna happen.) I think...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

My beef with HOAs is that they artificially inflate mortgage payments in Certain neighborhoods, so that Certain people can't buy houses there. It's illegal to discriminate based on race, religion, etc., but HOAs offer a convenient (and legal) workaround. Sure, everyone smiles and winks and...
