It's no secret how the cast of Critical Role feels about D&D. They're pretty open about it. I mean, Matt Mercer says it so often it's an internet meme.

Choosing to use 5E D&D is not the same thing as abandoning Daggerheart. Critical Role has always been "a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors who play Dungeons & Dragons." That formula has made them all very successful and very happy for a decade...why would they change it?

It's gonna be weird if the folks at Wizards of the Coast and the folks at Darrington Press were to stop by EN World and read some of the posts here. Some people on EN World are fully committed to this weird idea that there's tons of animosity between the two groups, that they are mortal enemies...

On a completely different note: Having 13 players in a 5E D&D campaign would make my head explode. But if any DM could do it, it would be Brennan Lee Mulligan.

If that's true, it's a really weird thing to believe. It presumes that Wizards of the Coast is only successful because of the D&D brand (not true), and that D&D is only popular because of Critical Role (also not true.) Daggerheart is a great game and I'm happy it's doing well, but Darrington...

I can't figure out where this rumor came from. Was it here on EN World, or Reddit? I've never seen it on any of the official Critical Role sites/feeds*. *I'm not on BlueSky or Twitter, so I don't know what's getting mentioned there. But I do subscribe to their newsletter.

I cut my gamer teeth on JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Ultima, and Dragon Quest, so I love turn-based combat in my video games. It's actually my favorite way to play an RPG of any kind: CRPG, TTRPG, JRPG, whatever the heck Ni No Kuni is... I think it's the Tactical mode that keeps me interested in...
