D&D General DM Says No Powergaming?

I had a super snarky response all queued up, but others have covered that. Thanks, folks. "Powergaming" is bologna. Pure and simple. If A DM isn't up to handling feats, or flight, or gasp multi-classing because they are still learning the system or how to run a game, fine. I hate it, but I can...

D&D General Homebrew World Brainstorm: Evolution-Driven Magic

So, um... George Lucas might have beat you to this. In all seriousness, there is actually some solid ideas that you can pull from Starwars lore. Specifically, there is a lizard on a planet where carnivores use the force to hunt. This lizard projects a bubble around itself where the force is...

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

    1. If you are using updated monsters, then they are rarely using spell slots. 2. If they are using spell slots, then they can be countered. 3. If we aren't using up to date RAW, then why are we even having this conversation? If this is a regular occurrence, why don't PCs have a preselected...

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

There are some major problems with that scenario. First, How many monsters actually cast Banishment? Death Knight, Arcanaloth, Undying Councilor, Archmage, and maybe a handful I missed. Probably less than a dozen evil creatures total across every source book. If we aren't fighting celestials...

D&D General Hot Take: D&D Has Not Recovered From 2E to 3.0 Transition

While the white room theorizing about this is interesting, I can't remember a single time in the last 8 years where a PC has been taken out of a fight by a bad save. A round or 2, sure, but nothing encounter ending. Playing pre 3.0 games it happened regularly. Sure, that is anecdotal, but I...

    D&D General The DM Shortage

Apparently, I am an absolutely atrocious 5e DM. Anecdotally, one of the better DMs I play with has an incredibly poor grasp of the rules. Our post session report is usually some commentary on the strength of his role playing and story telling and then me asking how he came up with on the spot...

D&D 5E (2014) What is REALLY wrong with the Wizard? (+)

I could have been clearer. The problem is misconceptions. Since the whole interweb says that wizards are the best, that they must be the best at everything, and when players find out differently, they can feel cheated. It's not a class problem, or even a player problem, as much as it is a...

D&D 5E (2014) What is REALLY wrong with the Wizard? (+)

I've seen a different problem from OP. Wizards as blasters. Sounds cool, right? Unoptimized as hell, but fun for a certain type of player. "Let's rain fire and death on our enemies, defile the corpses in search of exotic spell components, and bathe in the blood of their animal companions."...

WotC Hasbro Bets Big on D&D

Like this charming young lady? I believe there is a factory in China making life size dolls already. Not sure exactly what they are for though...

D&D General Iconic characters that have changed in later editions

IMHO, the only thing rogues prove, is that skill monkeys without magic are subpar at best. And that is coming from someone who still thinks martials are viable characters.

D&D General Is Spelljammer really that bad?

I obviously prefer more content, but a workable framework and some light lore that I can use as a base is a pretty good deal for $29.99. For double that, I had to pass. Ship to ship combat with maneuvering rules would have probably sucked me in. So would a 100 page monstrous compendium, a few...

D&D General Best Version to Experience Tomb of Horrors? (+)

I ran into the same issue with the 5e adaptation of Isle of Dread. It was beautifully adapted, but just not a good fit for 5e as written. Rangers, in particular, just nerffed the heck out of the hex crawl. A couple sessions in, I gutted the whole damn thing and reworked it to be more focused...

D&D General How are locks so hard to open?

It is worth mentioning that a quality lock is far easier to pick than the cheap knock-offs. The cheap parts and poorly fit mechanical gizmos inside an off-brand lock may be occasionally irritating to open with a key, but they are a son of a gun to open with picks.

D&D General what is the worst race in dnd?

Oh, I don't know. Every Gnome that I've never played has been cunning enough to avoid a brutal death.

Dragonlance Does Black Robe Life Channel work with Wratful Smite and Searing Smite?

I would guess that 99% of us are in agreement with that, but it is very rare to find a character idea that can't be re-fluffed into something setting appropriate. Most character rules are fairly setting agnostic if you strip out the flavor text, of say, the Samurai Fighter. Flavor wise, it has...

Dragonlance Does Black Robe Life Channel work with Wratful Smite and Searing Smite?

Get outta here with your "reading." That's not how I remember 2e. It was all, death by kitten, 1 spell a day, and alignment, Alignment, ALIGNMENT! 😂
