Dragonlance Does Black Robe Life Channel work with Wratful Smite and Searing Smite?

I get where you are coming from, and it's a perfectly logical interpretation. It's just not the same interpretation I'm coming to. If we assume that your rulling is correct, the game isn't broken, and I wouldn't have a problem running it that way as long as the whole table is in agreement, but...

Dragonlance Does Black Robe Life Channel work with Wratful Smite and Searing Smite?

Because doing it otherwise would open up a can of worms at my table. Does using the feat on round 1 of a spell mean you add that damage every round at no further cost? What about activating it post casting on a lingering effect? How bout AoEs? Does it boost damage on every target, or just one...

Dragonlance Does Black Robe Life Channel work with Wratful Smite and Searing Smite?

It sounds like the intent was for this to apply to (probably, single target) spells whose primary effect was dealing damage. The actual effect of such poorly worded rules just turns this into a complete mess. I'd probably rule that the save must be against initial actual damage, rather than the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Choose 3 to protect you (a poll)

Did you not see the D&D movie? Beholders make wonderful guards. Organized, compliant, and teamwork focused.

D&D General So which 2e adventures are beloved?

I can't remember many adventures. The DS stuff, i guess. Not that they were great, but they did a hell of a job introducing the setting, and flipbooks were always a hit. Dungeon Magazine, though, was in its heyday. I still use some of those brilliant adventures. Tons of great stories that have...

D&D General Handling the Orc Horde as a key setting element

This is a perfect origin story for orcs in a homebrew campaign, and I am shamelessly plagiarizing it. It's actually quite similar to draconians post War of the Lance. Ronin-esque warriors bred for war, but with no one to fight for, and no way to support themselves beyond raiding, slaving, and...

D&D General Handling the Orc Horde as a key setting element

Loads of great ideas for cultural and biological motivations. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is external stimuli. Orcs live in rough country, but so do much scarier monsters. A dragon moving into a new lair could easily prompt an orc migration across several tribes, and since the dragon...

D&D 5E (2014) Tired of using CON modifier as a bonus to HP? Here's a simple alternative...

HP per level of your rolled HD with a minimum of twice your Con bonus could be interesting. It keeps Con valid and involved, doesn't invalidate rolls, and also prevents most barbarians ending up with less HP than a lucky wizard.

Worlds of Design: How Big is Your Army?

Interestingly, there is some debate as to how often ballistic fire was commonly used. Some military historians are suggesting that direct fire was used far more frequently than we previously thought. The theory being that arrows were only likely to be effective against heavy armor when fired in...

Worlds of Design: How Big is Your Army?

An impact, yes. A large impact, thats more complicated. While the cost savings across an army of cantrip spanners would be dramatic in the field compared to ammunition using archers, only the most high-magic settings have enough casters to pull that off. In the cases where it's doable...

Worlds of Design: How Big is Your Army?

This. Effective communication would be far more effective than anything below 9th level spells, which would be devastating by design. From the fertile crescent of Babalon to present day Ukraine, effective communication has been at least as important as weapons or numbers. I'd expect a caster to...

D&D 5E (2014) Tired of using CON modifier as a bonus to HP? Here's a simple alternative...

That is a lot of adjustments, but it looks like they would be easy to adapt to with a good character sheet. If you have one, I'd love a link. Is it difficult to set them up for a virtual table top? My initial thoughts are that a few of them might have dramatic effects on builds and/or gameplay...

D&D 5E (2014) Tired of using CON modifier as a bonus to HP? Here's a simple alternative...

Uh, huh. But part of finding a solution is considering ramifications of both the existing rules as well as any changes one might make to them. Ignoring half of that equation leads to a laundry list of house rules to deal with unnecessary fallout. Most of us learned that in previous editions. Is...

D&D 5E (2014) Tired of using CON modifier as a bonus to HP? Here's a simple alternative...

The more I think about this, the more I wonder. Is this a solution in search of a problem? Is constitution really a drain on creative character design?

D&D 5E (2014) Tired of using CON modifier as a bonus to HP? Here's a simple alternative...

We max out HP and still add the Con bonus. It keeps Constitution relevant, but decreases it as an absolute necessity. Yes, that is a lot of freaking HP. No, I don't have problems threatening PCs.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on a DM ruling for Beastmaster Ranger

Honestly, if your beast was the equivalent of a wildshaped moon druid at your level it wouldn't exactly break the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Default Playstyle of 5E "Monty Haul?"

My 5 level 7 PCs light up like a Christmas tree if you Detect Magic. Most of those items are "very rare" or better. I still have no problem threatening them. Start building encounters a little north of "Deadly" and scale up until you find the right feel for your game. Now is that the default? I...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Creators Reveal Why There Are No Orcs On Krynn

Makes perfect sense. If someone really had to play an orc, I'd just fluff it as a hobgoblin from a savage tribe anyway.
