    Earth's Embrace drives me insane

I can't see how anyone would be able to arrive at this interpretation. However, I do think "Earth's Embrace" is probably the stupidest name they could have come up with. It would be better as "Choke Hold" and combined with other minor bonuses into one Tactical feat. Aaron

    Character backgrounds

I wish they hadn't continued to give out extra skill points at each level. I mean if your 20th level, why should it matter so much what you were doing years ago in your youth? To give out Hide and Move Silently as permanent class skills on top of 1 extra skill point per level is just too much...

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

I seems to me that you are using the terms "aware" and "unaware" backwards. They are always used to describe whether or not the acting character is aware of combat. I am "aware" if I know combat is going on and I am "unaware" if I don't. You do not keep track of which characters are aware of...

How awful is this house rule? (removing AoOs)

How could AoOs possibly make that much of a differerence? I played with AoOs from day 1 and it never had much of an effect on how combat went. If anything, it reduced the number of arguments/bad feeling since my bad guys couldn't just walk around the party unmolested. Aaron

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

I agree mostly with you. A character has to do -something- to warrent a sneak attack. Just Hiding isn't always enough. Hiding does not automatically make you opponent "unaware" of you! I might let a character rush out of a OM (or darkness etc) and get a sneak attack. Once. I wouldn't let him go...

How awful is this house rule? (removing AoOs)

I'd suggest keeping AoOs but only allow normal damaging attacks (i.e no tripping, grappling, sundering) and no cleaves either. That gets rid of 90% of the wonkyness associated with them. Aaron

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

He peaks around the edge of the column (thus having improved cover with its +10 bonus to Hide). Aaron

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

I think this is where you are getting in to trouble. Hide does -not- result in your opponent becoming "unaware" of you. Nor are hidden character considered invisible. Nor does being hidden mean you always get to sneak attack. The rules make a distinction between being hidden and whether the...

Ride skill and getting cover for free?

You can still use a free action to Take Cover at the end of your turn after you have attacked. Then you have cover through the enemies actions. Its kinda like quick drawing a dagger at the end of your action so you can AoO while holding a bow in the other hand. Aaron

    Summoned creatures and being flat-footed

Third. Plus I'll add that the Summon spells take an entire round (6 seconds) to work. You can assume there are some strange lights, sounds and swirling mists that notify everyone around of incoming monsters. Aaron

Ride skill and getting cover for free?

It's great. Your horse can make a double move (120 ft.) plus you Spur Mount (+20 ft.), then you Fast Dismount in front of the creature (+5 ft.) and take a 5-foot step. That's 150 ft. of movement. And then you get to take your full-attack. :) Aaron

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

You need total concealment to avoid AoOs. Normal concealment won't cut it. Ok. I'm not following. If your target is flat-footed, why bother with the OM at all? Just walk up and sneak attack him. Aaron

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

One important thing to consider is that the RAW don't give any advantage to being Hidden. For example, if I step behind a sufficently large tree, I get total cover and can Hide automatically. But, the enemy still knows were I am. Its the same with hiding in a Blurr. If the enemy can see your...

Sneak attacks within an Obscuring Mist

Why do you think that a successful Hide check grants total concealment? If you move into his square, you don't have concealment and thus can't Hide. You can only Sneak Attack someone in this situation if your flanking him or he's flat-footed. Aaron

Ride skill and getting cover for free?

I can only see two reason why it would matter. First, if your opponent has an attack readied. If you undo your cover to make an attack then he can attack you without the cover bonus. The second reason is if your Ride skill is low and you don't want to risk another DC 15 check. You make your...

    Adapting Troupe Play to D&D

    Subskills

A +1 in Climb (trees) costs 1/2 a skill point and a +1 in Climb (rocks) costs another 1/2 skill point. For the same 1 skill point, the character could just buy 1 rank in Climb. The main reason is because I envisioned it as a way for a character to be particularly good at one thing rather than a...

    Caster check vs Spell Resistance

I've always had a similar question about area effect spells. If you do a 4d6 fireball to 4 orcs, do you roll 4d6 once and apply the same damage to all of them or roll 4d6 for each one individually? Aaron

    Subskills

I had almost the exact same system for my SW game way back (only I called it Specialty Skills) with only a few minor exceptions: First, a Specialty Skill was limited to 1/2 the ranks of the main skill. So a 5th level character could have 8 ranks in Climb and up to 4 ranks in Climb(trees)...
