+1d6 sneak attack worth a feat (& vice versa)?

The seem fairly comparable to me. +2 versus everything or +3.5 versus most things under certain circumstances. It seems strange to me that high level fighters, whose entire life revolves around learning how to kill things, doesn't know how to strike at vital areas as well as a first level rogue...

Hide & sneak attack situation needs help!

The "shadowy illumination" zone does provide concealment. Does the field have grass? Bushes? If so then it also provides concealment. A character can hide in an open field, as described, if he's a ranger. If he's that good at hiding, he'd should have HiPS. Aaron

flat-footed: does your shield bonus to AC apply?

I'm not sure I'm buying this line of reasoning. If central handgrip-type shield were prone to wrist breakage, the Romans wouldn't have used them for over a thousand years. Neither would the Celts, Gauls, Vikings etc. Same is true for a shield that routinely broke lances before the bearer's...

Hide & sneak attack situation needs help!

I'm not sure what you mean by the "traditional way". But, there is no way to melee sneak attack a character when no cover and no concealment and two guards standing watch without being seen. As it is, the orc can sneak up to within 30 feet using the shadowy illumination. Then partial charge in...

    Rolemaster style parry

I have also tried to add options such as this. For this type thing, I changed fighting defensively so that it the to hit penalty is limited to BAB or 4 (whichever is greater) and the AC bonus is equal to +1/2 the penalty. So a 6th level fighter can take a -6 penalty for a +3 AC bonus. I do the...

flat-footed: does your shield bonus to AC apply?

How much padding did the shield have? What about a shield with a central handgrip like a Roman Scutum? Aaron

    Tobruk, 1941 - Help!

The 9th captured over 2,000 prisoners while in Torbruk. Not bad for being besieged. A prisoner snatch mission would probably be at night. Similar to that one in a later Band of Brothers. A super-soldier serum would work as well. As would some "atomic" device. Two great tastes that taste...

    Tobruk, 1941 - Help!

I'm assuming from the awkward misuse of the word "talent" that you are playing Godlike. It's too bad you chose the 9th Aus division. The 6th and 7th did alot more different things (africa, crete, greece, syria, pacific, etc). Here are a few things I could come up with ... The company master...

Hide Skill questions, esp. pertaining to attacking and sneak attacks

This is a problem for me. A character can't hide if being observed. So, if the goblin rogue had been seen by the party he can't just walk into cover and make a Hide check. Who is he fooling? If you ruled the tree was big enough to provide 100% cover (not too much a stretch depending on the...

    D&D 3.x Skill point adjustments to 3.5 D&D

I give 2 ranks to Knowledge skills based on the character's background. 1 is Knowledge (local) the other varies: Villager, Farmer: Knowledge (myths and legends) Townsman: Knowledge (history) Noble: Knowledge (nobility and royalty) Slave, Urchin, Outcase: Knowledge (criminal underworld) Wildman...

I know that d20 is good in D&D, but what about other settings?

Most of this really depends on how you define "brilliant." Is +10 brilliant? +15? +20? It seems to be generally be: "as high as I need to make it so that d20 looks like it sucks." The "+23 Diplomacy at third level thread" shows how easy it is to make a low level super focused skilled character...

    WWII d20?

There is occasional WW2 talk on the d20 System forum as well as Wizard's d20 Historical forum. The problem with VfV is two-fold. First, its not OGL so you can't really post rules and such. Secondly, for some reason most people who are interested in WW2 gaming pick d20 Modern so VfV's straight...

    Maiming Your PCs

That exact same thing happened to one of my players (maybe it was a leg). He overcame it by being polymorphed into an Umber Hulk for the rest of the adventure. He kept his severed leg in his backpack, casting Gentle Repose when needed, until he could get back to town to have it re-attached. My...

I know that d20 is good in D&D, but what about other settings?

I'm not following your lines of reasoning ('cept, of course, about autofire but that's completely independent of the rest of d20.) What do you mean by "severly limited"? What "effect" should technology have on a character? This last one I'm not even close to understanding. How (and why) should a...

Homebrew Serpentfolk - Watered down Yuan-Ti or Lizardfolk

Snakes don't have gills. If they did they would be eels and "sinister eel-man" just isn't intimidating enough. Sea snakes can stay underwater for several hours by slowly absorbing oxygen from air that they swallowed. What I would do if I were you is to create a base +0 LA snake make with few...

    Pulp Cthulhu no longer d20

I'm curious about what exactly is this book supposed to contain? There is already plenty of CoC stuff about the 20s (the prime pulpy era). Are they new, more cinematic, BRP rules or something? Is it more of a setting thing? Aaron
